Could you use a magnetic mixer to constantly agitate the mixture? Your friends would be impressed.
Would it help or hinder?

constant mixing might slow down colonizing of the liquid.

Damn you! You stole my idea for Coffe Liquid MYcelium! I currently have 1 Karo Jar With some Coffe in it, its FAR from a test to see if it will work, because i only did one jar, and didn't even really measure or keep track of how much i was putting in. Its more of random shot at greatness, in any case i'm going home for the weekend when i get back i am going to make do a test on Karo jars with a few drops of coffee extract and honey jars with some coffee extract. So far theres been no action in the one jar i did, so i sucked up some liquid myc from a honey jar iw as doing normally and put it in, i will let you know when i get back if it grows rapidly.

word.. I had real shitty luck with honey. I had 4/5 jars contaminate =( I think I did not PC the jar long enough, out of fear of carmelization and they got shitty. The karo jar got real nasty, and smelled like total shit. I was quite sterile when I performed the procedure, so the only thing I can think is that something living in the honey survived.
Anyways, I picked up a 3lb sack of malt extract today @ my local brewery supply store (it was hard to choose, there was 3 isles of malt) and am doing it up right now. I am innoculating it with a few CCs spores. I will let everyone know how the growth goes.

hey myco, quick question.
I just took my malt jar out of the PC, and its got some weird "flakey" things floating near the bottom. is that normal for this kind of thing? I PCd it for about 20 minutes or so.
thx.

one more last update :P
I *may* have fucked this one up, and if I did its my own fault :P Before I pressure cooked it, I also applied a layer of tape over the hole.
This was bad. When I inserted the syringe to inject the spores, a big fucking vaccum that formed literly sucked 3.5 cc of liquid right out and bubbled the jar like crazy. When i removed the syringe, it also released a small bit of pressure.
I am praying to the shroom gods that any little bit of air that it sucked in was contam free. I bleached the snots out of the work area, and had a nice bunch of hot air comming out of the stove so I may be lucky.
If not, well it is another lesson well learned :P

>>>>"flakey" things floating near the bottom.
this is normal when using malt. it is just excess sinking to the bottom. this will get used though so don't worry. you should also notice that as the days go by the water will get clearer.

if you were working over the stove then you should be just fine. although that was a shitload of spore fluid.... wow.... just be on the lookout for weird growth in your jar.
