Cottonseed hulls
    #2973631 - 08/06/04 10:26 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I was just at the farmer's Co-Op today and saw they had cottonseed hulls $5.00 for 45 lbs.

What is it good for?

I Think the protein content is higher than straw.

I'm wondering if it could be used as a substitute for vermiculite.

Looks like there is at least one link (PDF) about using them for oyster mushrooms in mycobags, so yeah it probably would work good. They do have more nutes than straw:
Some link to nutrient list

The protein looks the be the same as wheat straw, not sure about normal straw as all they list is wheat at that link.

I also read they get mushy/break down sort of fast once wet, and they say it's hard to not oversaturate them also, so they would probably not work as a verm replacement so well - but again nobody will know until someone tries it out a few times. Seems they might make for decent casing but they could have too much nutes so maybe as part of the spawn layer in a casing (still using verm/cococoir/etc for the inert layers).
