Went for a walk this evening and decided to take a look at a new development that is currently being built. Found a few pinners coming out of some bails out back, but nothing of great interest. From there I walked across a field into some woods that are pretty densely populated by birch and pine, although there are several others also. Found these growing out of a mix of moss and decaying leaves near no particular type of tree. The younger ones are bright red when they emerge with a stipe perfectly matching the red cap that can only compared to an overripe tomato. As they age the stipe and cap both take on similar shades of orange peach. Stipe is hollow and slightly fiberous. I'm well aware they arn't active, was just curious and figured someone could take a stab at it. Also, I have a spore print coming along that can be posted if need be.

I believe those are Hygrocybe miniata. They are distinguishable from other red waxy caps by their slightly decurrent gills, small size, and tufted (cespitose) habit. They are reported as edible in "Mushrooms Demystified". I've never eaten them but they certainly are beautiful mushrooms. Nice find.
