What's so great about the Grateful Dead?

I listened to a couple of songs by them, and seriously I don't like it. I don't say I hate it, I just don't like it.
Oh well I guess it takes all kinds of people to make a world.

Not again!
Yes, lets just say it takes all sorts, and many different frames of mind, and types of brain receptors/receptor openers.

Dude if I have to explain it you wouldn't understand.
You don't just listen to a few songs to dig them either, you need to try a live recording and give it a few listens. I've never liked any of my favorite CD's the first time I spun them, more like the 3rd or 4th when I started to hear all that was going on in them.

Crazy rooster crowin' midnight. Balls of lightning roll along. Old men sing about their dreams. Women laugh and children scream, And the band keeps playin' on.

I've had the exact same experience with many of my fav's. Sometimes it takes a little while to warm up to new music.
Snape, you should give them more of a chance. Their music is really varied. If Tons of Steel was the only dead song I ever heard, I wouldn't like them either.

Who are they? What are they like?
The Dead are improvisational rock n roll with a hefty dose of blues and jazz.
