Psilocybe cubensis "Mexican" PF-Tek cased
    #2971837 - 08/06/04 01:51 PM (13 years, 13 days ago)

[Note: subj is edited to show updates, but main post is unchanged.  See subsequent entries for log updates)

I?ve never attempted a grow before, so all of this is new to me.  Lots and lots of reading? thanks to the great teks and grow logs here at the Shroomery!

This is mostly text at the beginning except for a photo on today?s entry.  I figured you guys have seen all the prep stuff a hundred times.  I?ve been following the teks to the letter, so no surprises there.

Jul 8 ? inoculated 4 PF-style jars, Mexi-cub strain.  Standard PF tek.  Was bored waiting for spores to arrive, so I prepared them almost a week ahead of time.

Jul 13 ? first day of observable myc growth.  Incubator is at a constant 80 degrees.

Jul 20 ? Twelve days since inoculation.  2 jars at 90%, 2 jars at about 50% colonization.

Jul 21 ? Decided to inoc some more jars, this time with rye berries.  Used Magash?s simple grain tek.  My PC isn?t big enough, so I used ? pints.

Jul 25 ? I?m bored, so knocked up 3 extra BRF/verm jars with a thai strain.  Leaving in a few days, so why not get some more jars going while I?m gone? I also decided to prepare a 50/50 coir/verm casing for the PF cakes.

July 26 ? All 4 of my original PF jars appear 100% colonized (the first two have been like this for a couple of days already).  Also, the rye jars are showing observable myc growth.

Jul 27 ? I am leaving tomorrow, so I decided to birth the first two PF jars.  They have been at 100% for about 4 days.  Used crumble & case tek with my pre-made casing mixture.  Put into fruiting chamber, misted, and covered loosely with plastic wrap.

Aug 3 ? Returned home to discover a lovely colonized casing.  Patched about 5 half-dollar size spots.  Misted again and re-covered with plastic wrap.  Turned on the air pump/humidifier setup.  Also the rye jars are nicely colonizing, so I shook them vigorously and put them back into the incubator.

Aug 4 ? Cased the remaining two PF jars that were knocked up on July 8.  Rye jars already recovered and grew some more, so I decided to go ahead and case them too (separately from the PF cakes of course).  Now I have three separate casings sitting in my fruiting chamber.

The first casing is already poking through again, but this time very evenly.  So I have removed the plastic wrap and turned on the air pump/humidifier/lighting setup.  I am using a variation of the Poor Man?s Pod, running the lighting for 6 hours per day.  RH is at about 90% (my gauge is a cheapo that only reads about 85%, so I am guessing it?s higher ? there is condensation on the sides of the tub).    Since the other two casings aren?t ready yet, they are covered with plastic wrap and foil.

Aug 6 ? Both the second PF casing and the rye casing need patching this morning.  Wow, they are growing fast!  Patched and re-covered.  The first casing is looking very good.  There are some vertical strands of mycelium in little groups all over the casing.  I understand that this is where pins form, so I am very excited!

Also, the three Thai jars that I started on July 25 are at about 50% colonization.

That?s it for now.  Hoping to have some pins soon!

Thanks for the encouragement, guys.  Today I uncovered the other two casings and patched 'em up again.  Hope to see some pins on the first casing soon.

I've got some houseguests at the moment so stealth mode is in force. Will update with new pix when something measureable happens (and I have a few minutes alone with my new babies... )

Aug 10 ? Woo-hoo!  First tiny pins today!  When I fanned the chamber this morning, I didn?t notice? but then when I fanned again at about 2pm, I noticed a couple of tiny primordia.

I know that you guys know what I mean when I say my pulse quickened and I got a big smile on my face!  I?m giddy with anticipation.  I can visualize the whole tray full of yummy fatties, and I can hardly stand it.  This is exciting!

Sorry no pic, but my houseguests are still here, and I can barely get in there to fan them, let alone do a photo shoot.  Damn.

Aug 11 ? Awoke early this morning to find a gorgeous pinset.  There are so many I can?t even count them all?  All this is in the first casing, a 9?x5? container that I cased from the initial two PF cakes on July 27.

This first photo shows my entire fruiting container.  The batch we are talking about is the upper right.

Here is a close-up of the pinning casing.  This is from 2 crumbled cakes?

And for you pin-porn fans, here?s a close-up of the lower-left section from this same casing.

Nope.  No overlay that I can tell.  But there are lots more tiny dots that will probaby be more pins...

And regarding "too many pins" I don't think there is a whole lot I can do about that!  I'm just glad that I've got 'em, know what I mean?  :crazy2:

Thanks for the feedback; keep it coming everyone!

My understanding of overlay is that it is a thick dense mat, not fluffy. Is this correct?

Again, this is my first grow so I'm certainly not an expert. My humidity is still pretty high, but I stopped misting when the pins appeared. The other two casings haven't pinned yet, so I'm reluctant to drop the RH any more.

I have some new pix to upload, but I have to wait about an hour before my 24-hr upload limit resets.

Just having a white layer over your casing is overlay. An ub overlayed casing will be coir with pins sticking through the csing. You can see with my last grow theres a bit of overlay in areas,

My understanding prior to this was that you should patch if there are specific areas that pop up too soon, then when everything looks even, you switch to fruiting mode.

With that in mind, after this flush is finished and I do a dunk tek, do I put it back in incubator mode and keep patching until all I see are pins emerging?

you want to cover up whast showing and fruit the next day. You want the myc to be just under the casing.

Aug 13 - houseguests finally left this morning. Good timing, too. Here is what I woke up to this am:

I went ahead and harvested those where the veil had dropped; some of those groups still had pins at the base which appeared to be aborts.

I'm guessing I pulled about a fourth of them. Weight so far is 20g.

These guys are pretty little -- 3/4" diameter caps, about 3" tall. Stems are kinda thin. I think my casing dried out a bit -- it was pulling away from one side of the container. I've been fanned 3-4 times/day as time permits. As I mentioned before, it's been difficult to get in there due to my visitors this past week.

I like how those mexi-cubs grow! 20g, wet? Not bad for a first harvest! Eat em fresh if you can  They loose some potency as they dry.

It will probably be a total of about 60-80g wet.  I only harvested & weighed about a fourth of the flush so far!

I'm very excited about having this kind of success on my first attempt.  :crazy2: :mushroom2:  :nut:
