half pint jars at k-mart, and verm at any nursery. perlite can be found at home depot, but HP will very likely not have verm.

also i thought the whole asbestos thing happened in the early 90's? i read that verm does not contain it anymore, that it was from one vermiculite mine.

your only guarenteed source for vermiculite is a good nursery, i went to several places before i found it. i called home depot and they said they had it, then i rode my longboard 1 1/2 miles only to get there and have them tell me perlite is the same thing and that is all they have.

I got my verm at "Frank's" nursery place, they have a bajillion stores in my neck of IL. But I see on their site only two to choose from in FL (Bradenton and Sarasota) so maybe not so accessible for you. You should have some sort of hard-core gardening center somewhere nearby though, it would be real strange if not. Home Depot had none (guy said "yeah I know we did have it, dunno why not anymore") but they still had perlite/peatmoss/etc. Also K-mart had none, and neither did Wal-Mart. Tried them all before going to a "real" gardening store. Also my bag sez "ASBESTOS FREE" on it in a huge yellow circle, so maybe the whole asbestos thing was more recent or something.

Jars were similarly impossible to find, being it is out of season (though, season is soon, I think). I finally got them at Jewel, whereas Dominicks (elsewhere aka Albertsons, Safe-Way, and a few other corporate aliases thereof which I can't recall) and K-Mart and Wal-Mart and Target and basically everywhere else you'd think of didn't have any at all anywhere (well, maybe some shouldered ones or similar choices of limited usefulness). I had thought I would not find any until it was in season so I tried some Ziplock brand plastic 8oz containers, and they worked real nice, no problems even in the PC etc (though I have a 10psi PC not a 15, so my temps are slightly lower, but I'm positive they would stand up to alot more). I eventually got jars, but I think I'd have rather just gotten a few more packs of the plastic containers, being lighter to move around and inspect and all, and quieter, and no slow warmup on the PC step (they won't shatter if you go from 70 degrees up to 250+ in as fast as your stovetop can).

And SamhainJ, I hope you kicked the home depot guy in the nuts after all that bull! Perlite is not and never was the same thing. Freakin shredded corrugated cardboard is closer to the same thing, but still it just isn't! Even in a 'normal' garden!

i found my jars in wal-mart over in the section that has drinking cups, and they were on the top shelf. i also found some in the coffee isle i think. you could always try looking for the jelly jar type, i guess that would be somenear a place to get stuff for making jelly. also, verm and perlite you can find at head shops. so if they sell bongs, pipes, and growing supplies, you can check them out. if you have a Lowes, thats the place to be to get perlite and verm also.

Asbestos is a common form of magnesium silicate which was used in various construction products due to it's stability and resistance to fire. Asbestos exposure by inhaling loose asbestos fibers is associated with various forms of lung disease.

I found jars right next to the pressure cookers at wally world, it was back by the pet foods here. What was wierd is i found PC's over in housewears, but all small ones, i had a mirro in my cart till i went over for some WBS in the pet dept, and i find the canning jar section, which also had larger presto PC's. Worked out great, got my PC, jars, and WBS all within 10 ft of each other. Now i noticed wally world and homedepot and the like don't carry verm, oh they might claim they have it on the phone, till you get there, walk 100000 miles it seems to some back shed, where they open it and you find out they also have vermiculate insulation!!!! Hit your local gardening shop for vermi. Peace

No reason you can't buy all of them online and have them shipped to you. Verm and Perlite are both fairly light so shipping charge shouldn't be much.

I couldn't find vermiculite for a while there at stores like wal-mart, etc. What I did find was a $10 bag from Lowe's that is more than enough to fill a large garbage can (that's actually what I use to store the bag in, its that huge!). I have more verm. than I will ever use. No probs finding perlite, jars, etc. Usually I go to Albertsons for the jars (nice canning sup. aisle) and Lowes for everthing else. Wal-mart has a good "potting mix" that replaced the old "jiffy-mix" is a soil/peat blend with some hort.lime for balanced ph., good for an instant casing mix. Hope this helps.
