Just to let all you guys know, Mr. Endo has sent me a pic of an agar plate that was inoculated with EQ spores on 25/4/04 (as seen in the pic). He told me these spores were not kept in good conditions occaisoanly reaching quite hot temperatures. After 2 monthes of inoculation these spores began to grow and allready cloned, according to Mr. Endo...

okay... i'll bite since it's so quiet.
a pressing question comes to mind; by your saying "cloned" am i to infer that what i see on the pictured plate was successfully fruited?

the long germination period may have been a result of dehydrated spores. while dehydration shouldn't necessarily affect vitality it does introduce a rehydration period.
once visible mycelia was established did it seem to grow out at an acceptable speed or was impairment noticable?

Yes, I have also just germinated some 3 1/2 yr old PR spores. The germination is no real issue, just taking longer. It`s the actual rate of mycelial growth that tends to be far slower. Fruiting the culture will most likely yield a new spore print for future use.

OK M.E. told me the OLD EQ mycelium grows at a regular rate now, but, the mycelium fails to give out any rhizomorphic lines, though he is still hoping for it to fruit...

It is mostly the best to try old spores on liquid media or put them in steril water for a few days.

I've grown out original PFC syringes that were 6+ years old. All germinated in 7-10 days! Damn those are some potent fuckers!! Dehydration plays a big part in prints and long term storage.

there are strains that i only find a print each 4-5 years (what a mess of prints i know) and they start just like any non-fresh print... (sometimes the germ is real quick) and i've used no fridge, just stored it sealed of light and air... (no vaccum though)... it works wonders... btw, classic PFs! FH

No dehydration after 4-5yrs.? Wow that is amazing! Ya I don't store any prints in the fridge myself either

This gives me a bit of hope. I recently received some very rare spores that are 20 years old. They've been six weeks on agar and so far. . .nothing. I won't toss the dishes, but just leave them be and hope for the best. I sure would like to see these germinate.

Maybe placing some sterile water in the dish would help with the rehydration process, I also always break the surface of the agar when germinating spores and find 95% of the time the break is the first place to germinate. Damn 20yrs. what strain? I have several prints of the original PFC's that would be great if I decide to start them up again Lemme know how they go RR and GL

I have had similar experiences also... The spores often need to be embedded in the agar, not just sitting on the surface.
You might try using a spreader to embed them. Or you might try an overlay with soft agar.

After begining my lost hobby once again, I have found that 3 year old mazatapec spores rehydrated and germinated in a week. Alas, The p.tamp spores did not.:( They were both of the same age. Weird. The p.cub print was far thicker tho. Both were started in 2% honey water. P.tamp spores were also wiped on agar but also no growth. Its been two months....
