Unknown Talent Languishes in Cyberspace -- Film at 11!
    #2968403 - 08/05/04 04:42 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

You're familiar with the concept of "the garage Kubrick," well, I think I might have stumbled onto the "garage Da Vinci!" I stumbled upon this photo in the Pub. It's pure genius! Check it out!

Formally, this is actually a very nicely balanced composition. Notice how the sheer mass of the central figure terminates the left to right arc of eye-movement created by the bridge and horizon line; then the eyes very naturally flow back to the smaller black rocks on the lower left. Its own tao is very nicely realized. It's a closed circuit. It's like visual poetry.

Also note the degree of geometric figure-ground interplay; it's complex but fully realized like the underlying cubist grid in a de Kooning painting from the mid-1950s.

It is a triangular composition -- very stable, and always a classic -- the triangle would appear, at first, to be slightly asymmetric, based on the compositional surface area, but it actually balances out tonally because of the darkness of the smaller rocks in the lower left. There is also a degree of atmospheric perspective, and proscenium-like theatrical-framing, which harks back to the Florentine painters of the late-renaissance; creating a connection of the present with the past; a temporal circuit.

In terms of subject matter, the banality of the central figure, and his mass -- possibly alluding to the "Girth of a Nation" -- makes for an interesting ironic statement about the pathos of the "every-man" plugged-in to the fast-food matrix. It's sort of like a fast-food-age pieta (see image below).

Also note the ambiguity of central subject's facial expression (read: smile). It is very similar to the Mona Lisa. The central subject appears to be a male, but has breasts, so like the Mona Lisa, could this also be a statement of gender identity?

This is a very complex work, of pure genius, which works on many levels. I will have to spend quite some time with this potential master-work to truly understand it...

This person is obviously slaving away somewhere, out there in cyberspace, without the benefit of Medici-styled patronage system. We need to help them. We need to find the auteur, and get him/her an NEA Grant or something...

This could be the next Cindy Sherman!

ROFL Pap!

This is why I love art - one can find so much in a piece of art that most-likely wasn't even intended by the artist.

Are the gods chanelling such brilliance through the artist, or is it from the art's experiencers? Now THAT is the question!

Insert an "I think" mentally in front of eveything I say that seems sketchy, because I certainly don't KNOW much. Also; feel free to yell at me.

I agreed when I read your reply to the picture in the pub, and I agree still.
