What does it mean?
    #2967990 - 08/05/04 01:14 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

I saw this at the bottom of a news story:

Quote:

Q: Some Democrats have suggested that the Bush administration is playing politics with the threats to bump Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry from the headlines and boost Bush, who is viewed as a strong leader in the war against terrorism. Are they right?

A: Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge strongly denied the charge Wednesday. "I categorically state that none of the terror threats are politically motivated," he said.

Now for my ignorance... what does it mean to categorically state something?

like if I 'categorically deny having made any statements about subject x'... That means at no time did I ever make any statements about subject x. Subject X is a category, and I am denying having anything to do with that category in my past speech.

Bin Laden on the 9/11 attacks: "I categorically state that I have not done this".

In my opinion it just adds emphasis. Bin Laden could have simply said "I have not done this". People like to dress words up and take them out on the town. I categorically deny such embellishment my own posts.

I once read a website that had origins of words and phrases. It was pretty cool but I don't have the address on hand. The history of language can be very interesting.

I think its just a tactic for dealing with press questions. by using the word 'categorically', the interviewee is implying 'dont ask me any more questions related to that subject, because you're just going to get the same answer.'
