Reduce image file size quickly and very easily

I have just discovered this and can't really explain how it works, but hey, who cares. I had a JPG photo that I wanted to upload but it was to big at 240kb. All I did was open it up in MS paint and saved it as a different file name as a JPG. The file size was reduced to 75kb! The image quality seemed identical to me but it makes it much easier to upload and quicker for people viewing the thread. Try it for yourself and let me know if it works for you.

Do you mean that it had a different extension, rather than being a jpg it wound up a bmp? The default file format for ms paint is bmp I believe. If so, it worked because a bitmap (bmp) is a much older format, and doesn't have the same quality as a jpeg. So it would naturally be a smaller file.

No quite the opposite, bitmaps are much much larger files than JPG's. All I did was open a JPG and go file "save as", select JPG from the dropdown list and changed the file name! It has saved as .jpg file extension. I think it is because the camera saves the photo with greater resolution but to be honest, I can't tell the difference.

I just tried it, it works, I got Paint to reduce a 1.53meg jpg into a 411kb jpg, and it looks about the same. I could get that same 1.53 meg jpg into a 289kb jpg in photoshop, and the quality looks the same to me. I'll stick with photoshop.

better yet: download gimp and export to png, changing the compression settings however you please.

another fun thing is using zlib compression on bitmaps -- most things are competent enough to unzip on the fly (or pipe the output, or whatever it's doing)

Try it Murex, i can't see any obvious reduction in quality and it makes the difference between being able to post a picture or not. This is supposed to be a tip to help people who may not have much computer experience.

My tool of choice, if you come across it. Macromedia Fireworks is easy and fast at reducing image quality. Reducing the quality to 80% chops a fair bit off the size in KB and there's not really any noticeable reduction in quality. Although Photoshop is cool also.

It is no trick, it seems that the quality setting of MS Paint is simply set to a setting lower than that of your original picture.
