Most preffewr hardwoods, but there must be something that will grow on conifers, I just cant think of anything at the moment.

For most of the species softwood is not as good as hardwood.
But some species like SRA and Pleurotus pulmonarius also grow on softwood.
It would be better to boil the chips since you remove the resin that keeps mycelium from growing.
