SAN DIEGO -- Officials warn teenagers looking for a quick high that Jimson weed is not the way to get it.
The weed's origins go back to the middle ages in history and folklore as a powerful hallucinogen. But experts say it's very toxic and deadly.
"It can cause coma, can cause seizures and convulsions. It can also cause a rapid heart beat, dry mouth and blurred vision," said University of California San Diego Director of Toxicology Dr. Richard Clark.
Clark said people who intentionally abuse Jimson weed mistake it as a party drug. The side effects, including inability to urinate, could last up to several days. And since overdosing is easy, many users end up in the hospital, according to Clark.
Jimsom weed is a tall bushy plant with big, night-blooming flowers and ragged leaves that grow seedpods.
It's officially called Datura Stramonium, but some call it "locoweed." Gardeners might know it as "moon flower" or "trumpet flower."
Eric Sears, a 17-year-old hiker from Carlsbad who was found dead in Joshua Tree National Park in July, apparently drank tea made of Jimson weed the night he disappeared.

Wow, that doesn't sound very bad at all compared to what they say cannabis can do to a person. Too bad he left out the part about death, self-mutilation, days of delerium, etc..

I disagree... in fact, other than the first line of the story, they seem to go out of their way to make it sound non-deadly:

Taken as a whole, lots of unpleasant effects and people often end up in the hospital. Not too much about the death side of things... they kind of make it sound like people that would normally die from it end up in the hospital instead... maybe I am being overly critical. *shrug*

well, alot of people hear stuff like "you COULD walk around the street in your underwear speaking in toungs,wearing one shoe and picking verbal fights with innanimate objects untill escalating to swings and then break into someones apartment and end up strapped to a bed in the hospital lock-up"
...and think,
"whoah dude, my minds totally made up,i gotta try it, how many teaspoons of these little seeds i gotta chow on?"
this has one of the lowest re-use rates of any drug iv'e ever seen. thogh theres always a few wackies....

There is no arguement about the effects it can produce. These are well documented for centuries, even before paleface ruined the continent. Perhaps your source was bad... You most definitely got lucky.

I really wish articles on Datura were better written and that articles on marijuana and such were less filled with hysteria. It would get the point across about drugs that actually NEED to be avoided by 99% of people.

STUDENT CUTS OFF PENIS AND TONGUE
A student cut off his penis and tongue with garden shears while tripping on an hallucinogenic drug.
The 18-year-old German went into his garden and set about severing his organs after downing a tea made with the plant Angels' Trumpet.
The plant is a powerful and dangerous hallucinogen.
Doctors were unable to re-attach either his penis or tongue.
The student has been named only as Andreas, from Halle.
His mother said: "Andreas was behaving normally the whole day until he left the house and disappeared into the garden for a couple of minutes."
When he returned to the house he was wearing a towel wrapped around him and was bleeding heavily from his mouth and between his legs.
Angels' Trumpet is the latest drugs craze to sweep Germany.
Doctors said the teenager would need years of support.
Dr Andreas Marneros, from the local psychiatric hospital where the student was admitted to, said: "Andreas will have to receive psychological help for years.

Is that seen very often with Datura???? If so that is VERY strange indeed... I would tend to believe it is all about the individual as stated above. I highly doubt, well I know for a fact I would not start cutting pieces of my body away if I went temporarily insane.

"jimson weed ,angels trumpet" grows wild all over the area i live.it takes quite a shitload of seed from seed pods to get an effective dose.the plant grows rather low to the ground and its flower resembles a white trumpet.the seed pods are spiny resebling maple tree seed pods.when the pods are young they are green and very dense.the pod matures and drys out for seed dispersal.at the point the pod is mature is when we used to collect the seeds wehn myself and friends were young.i have witnessed and have been part of the insanity.its nothing you want to continue the use of.ive had friends destroy friends homes,wake up in strangers homes surrounded by the police,walking through neighborhoods naked with one shoe on looking in peoples windows then picked up by the police,sent to the hospital and strapped down for days,locked in padded rooms for days,you name it.also its common for grazing cattle who eat enough to die.dont take my word for it.another symptom is complete memory loss.mono indians here call it loco weed.i see jimson weed everyday i leave my house.one occasion some friends were passing joints that didnt exist,trying to climb house plants,setting fire to couches,arguing with people that didnt exist,vomitting blood pissing and shitting their pants.and that was all at one trip gathering at a rich girls house in gated community whose parents which owned the house had white carpet
