I wiped down the jars after I took them out of the pressure cooker and placed them in the glove box. Then I flamed the needle before each jar and wiped off each lid before I stuck the needle through the tape. I do not see any visible contams, but the tupperware my jars have been in smells sweet and yeasty.

Did you wait at least 4 hrs. to innoculate? The smell is outside the jars? Leave them alone and just be patient, wait at least 10 days before you start freaking..

Yes, I let them sit over night. So, what you are saying is it might not be contaminated?? I have been reading that if it smells throw it out?? Before I put the jars in the tupperware after I innoculated, it didn't smell, I am assuming the smell came from within the jars.

if the jars had no visible contams then you should have kept them. It could have simply been some bacteria in the tupperware container but not the jars themselves. You shouldn't really put them in a closed tupperware container. This restricts air flow and fosters contamination. A dark drawer works best. You should also pressure cook your jars for 1 hour at 15 psi just to be safe. Wipe the jars and your work area down with rubbing alcohol before innoculation. Flame sterilize the syringe before you begin. If you do that you should have no problems. I have NEVER had a problem with contams using this process. However if all of your jars are contaminated the same way, then you might consider the possibility of a contaminated syringe, I have had this problem before. but you should wait until you can see visible contamination before you throw the jars. Often times foul smells can be created simply by a sealed tupperware container alone...so don't use the tupperware container.

Well Banana, it sounds like you did everything ok, you were very precautious about being sterile... it sounds like the  'syringe' was probably bad..., did you get it from a vender?  Or did you make it yourself..... it wouldn't happen to be 'cambodian' would it :wink:?  One way you will know for sure is to wait till something appears, if it was the 'sporejiuce', then the contam will show up at the the innoculation points.  otherwise it would be around the top if it were from the verm barrier being too thin.

It was from a vendor : ). I am obviously not ready to be trying to make syringes from prints, I can't even innoculate a jar on my own! Hopefully my next run will go better! : )

Oh, I didn't throw the jars out yet, sorry got a little ahead of myself earlier, I just took them out of the room with other jars that are colonizing ( I didn't innoculate those jars!), so I will keep them and determine what is causing the smell, I will also let them breath. Thanks

take them out of the tupperware container and just put them in a dark drawer and see if the smell goes away. don't throw the jars out until you have VISIBLE contamination.
