I just love these.  Especially the baby ones- they remind me of serious little gnomes.  These were so yummy cooked in olive oil with pasta!

This is where we found them.

Looks more like Oregon to me. I've always had a flare for picking up that way- our similar edibles are so scant. Nice finds. They do have a gnomish(that's a word bastardization) stature to them- like "stop here and go no further - answer me three questions..heheheheheh!" Oh hell- I'm going to bed.

Thanks Muse sick- nope it's in the rocky mountains.  Good guess though.  You'll have to come out here and mushroom hunt sometime! Too bad it's not humid enough to find cubies though. At least from what I have heard.

Cool finds Phishgrrl

I'm looking forward to bolete season here in Ohio. So far the only thing I have found are little red and yellow ones that bruise blue, but the others will be out soon I hope. Those sure do look yummy.

You can probably eat those- look it up in a mushroom book! I think there are only 1 or 2 boletes that will cause stomach pains. Those boletes in my pics, lots of them had a turquoise-ish color around the base, and they bruised black. A bit scary looking, but yummy!

My husband caught some teeny ones. I guess there aren't many big fish in that river, the biggies live in the lakes.

I don't fish, but he is a fly fishing fanatic. I assume you fish, sheik?

I avoid the yellow and red boletes, too many poisonous lookalikes, maybe I'm just too lazy to sort um out.

Boletes are one of the safest groups of mushrooms for edibles. All of the poisonous species bruise blue, or have red or orange tubes or tube mouths, or both. There are a few species that don't have those characteristics that are inedible because of flavor (peppery, bitter, etc), but none of the others are poisonous (at least in North America).

There have been a few cases of mild poisoning by Leccinum species with orange caps found under aspens. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to definitively isolate a species causing the problem. There was a case in 1997, and Marilyn Shaw as able to obtain a specimen which was shown to Harry Thiers. He stated that it would not be found in any book anywhere (in other words, an unknown species).

The symptoms of the Leccinum poisonings are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. An important thing is to be sure you cook your Leccinums thoroughly. Undercooked or raw Leccinums will almost always cause those symptoms.

Happy mushrooming!

I find scaber stalks to be kind of gritty in texture. The restaurants that I used to sell boletes to in Manitou springs colorado wouldnt buy them, only the kings.

Great find! The rockies are indeed alive w boletes, it is my personal opinion after a few forays recently that it will be a bumper season if the moisture keeps falling from the sky. We found primordia by the walmart sacks full.
