Beatrix Potter Birthday
Peter Rabbit Author, Mycologist



Today is the 160th birthday of Helen Beatrix Potter. She was born on July 28, 1866 and died on December 22, 1943. Potter will always be known as the writer of the Peter Rabbit books. But she was not only an author. Her interests included entomology, geology and paleontology and were only surpassed by her interest in mycology, the study of fungi. For years she collected specimens, identified and dissected them, painted them in minute detail and even developed theories on mold spores and lichens. She painted hundreds of watercolors of all varieties of fungi.
