OOPS! HAVE I MESSED UP??
    #2962972 - 08/04/04 04:17 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

so i had some substrate turning a manky yellowy colour in the corner of the plastic tib with my substrate in it. so i cleaned my hands with antibacterial soap and carefully pulled this substrate away with some tissue, i accidentally ended up touchin some substrate with my fingers although i was very quick. i noticed the substrate i pulled away underneath was a bit dirty black like a shroom had exploded yet they havent even started pinning yet, but when i looked inside i noticed realy tine shrooms, caps n all growing INSIDE the substate and not coming up. i also noticed just 1 very tiny mushroom, almost just a cap appearing through the top of the substrate, with a little mycellium on top, should this get bigger and form, when i say tiny i mean not even a half centimetre. i am concerned cos i was expectin small pins to appear first but none at all?? oh i also noticed a larger almost fully formed shroom growing through the side of the substrate where theres a very small gap between the substrate and the plastic container.....any ideas??

Assuming you are on the fruiting step, and have set up some light and such in a fruiting chamber setup. If you are still colonizing then this doesn't apply (but, instead you should have NO light during colonization, just dark and 85 degrees or so).

Sounds sort of like you have pins, but you need to block out more light around the sides of your tub (assuming it's a mostly clear one, or at least lets some light through on the sides). This will force them to come up where you want them, "up" towards the lights and not trying to go out through the sides of the container (that the shrooms don't know is there, as they assume "light" = "out" or "up"). These little formations sound like "aborts", which are shrooms which tried but failed. You should remove them since they will not grow, and can invite contamination.

You might have some sort of contamination already but it sounds more like it's just a wad of aborts/pins which didn't know which way to go. Listen to just about anyone else first, about all I know I have picked up from lots of reading (so far), my own grow is not that far along yet - but of course I've been doing my homework in preparation.

Also, are you casing these cakes, or just plain birthing them?

that dirty black is a contamination. i'm not positive without pics though, but this 'explosion' sounds very much like a common contaminant.

You can try to cut out the infected area with a sterile knife. Then spray the casing down with a 1:200 bleach/water solution. You may still be able to save it. It will take a few days for the mycelium to recover from the spraying, then it should pin again.

If you are going to try to save it do it away from any other casings to avoid spreading contams. If i'm lucky enough to have any contams self-contained I throw without question. I will always sacrifice a few for the many! GL Kev2
