Garbage disposal for chopping straw?
    #2962781 - 08/04/04 12:35 AM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Think it would work?

It might macerate the straw to pulp, which may or may not work well.

it's not a good idea... you'll probably mess up the disposal... a few ways it can happen... it could gum up the works, to use it with the least amount of damage you need to run water, this would cause you to loose most of the straw, run without water can cause the bearing to gall and sieze permanently destroying the disposal...

I fugure that at best it will just muck it up a good bit, if you look down in there you will see a couple of little impellers that basicly crush and break what ever they contact, they are mounted to a perferated plate that allows the impellers to fly about freely, most likely the straw will get lodged under and around them and cause them to stop...

I just spent 4 hours battling the same problem with my tiller, weeds and the like wrapped around 6 feet of spinning blade... it didnt chop like I expected, it just mucked up the works...

Maybe if you ran a hose and emptied it into a seive you could catch the straw and the water could just run down the hill.

Also, how you feed it in would probably make a difference.

Have you ever seen the movie Fargo?

Perhaps a nice brush shredder is needed.

I have access to all the straw......shredded or bailed that i could ever desire........so this seems comical

Yeah, those things are several hundred dollars.

Who has pre-shredded straw in your area and what are they using it for?

Grain Farmers.......I guess your location would be of upmost importance........Seeing how it's time for harvest, the combines will be running 24/7.......If you've ever walked behind a combine(not whilst it is runnin, as this could be dangerous) you will find an abundent supply of said straw.....Not unlike following a cow in search of manure......

I used to be a grain/hay farmer in Montana........some farmers bail the straw up and sell it.......but most just turn it back into the soil as mulch........there is not a big demand for straw, as it has little if any nutritous value. It primarily is sold as a bedding material.

Hell, there were many a year in Montana we would bail that shit up and sell a few hundred bales, and then just burn the rest.

I would estimate that 1/4 of the straw coming out the back of the combine would meet your needs of "pre shredded", and that with a rake in hand you could collect a lifetime supply in a day.......and I can't think of a farmer that I know that would object to the gathering of said straw.......they might even get a laugh outta it.

peace

Yeah, all we got around here is corn, soybean and big round hay bales made from grass, a little bit of cotton in some areas, no wheat, barley, oats, etc...

I assume you checked all the pet supply kinda places.......

I wonder how much fed-ex would laugh, and charge to pick-up a couple wool bags of shredded straw.......in case you dont know.......a wool bag is about 5'x 3'(diam)........yes I used to shear them bastards too! fockers never hold still!!!!

good luck in yur search

A garbage disposal is a grinder and a pump. San pedro is very diffrent than pound after pound of straw. It could work in small amounts at a time (provided the grinding worked favorably at all), but a lawn mower could take anything you throw at it short of tree branches.

Rent one... Every rental center I've ever heard of rents them. (no, not Blockbuster)

"pre-shredded straw" is usually just called "straw". Harvesting whole straw by yourself just to shred it later would be a waste of time.

run it over with the lawn mower on concrete, i do it in the garage, but i reckon the basement or the street would work.

I can see it now.......The inventor(and patent holder) of the newly created "Lawn Mower/Straw Shredding Device" gets sued after a normally intelligent consumer loses his left hand opperating said device.

"after carefully reading ALL the instructions.......and consuming a half rack of Busch beer......Joe Public lost his left hand in a horrible Lawn Mower/Straw Shredding accident last monday......All this in an effort to obtain a relatively common substance.......Shredded Straw......."

But I think it would make a great story line for an episode of 'King of the Hill'.......Boomer Takes Up A New Hobby...Mycology and the Art of Shredding Straw
