Hay-loving mushrooms
    #2961200 - 08/03/04 05:21 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

Hello all.

I'm just curious... I live in southeast Tennessee and I recently discovered some dried mushrooms on some extremely old and undisturbed (and probably rotted) hay. I'm going to wait until we have a good rain and then check them out again.

My question is, can anyone name off the top of their head any mushroom--active or inactive--that loves hay like this? I noticed that they were rampant in hay bales that were shaded, and of course they hate the sun and heat (since they were shriveled and pathetic-looking). However, the base of one which was still embedded deep into the hay seemed to be brown and hollow.

I searched on the site for mushrooms in my area, but I could not find any information regarding hay-loving mushrooms.

Thanks.

coprinus micaceus and other coprinus, panaeolus subbalteatus, and I've seen mycena and other random species growing within old hay and new hay. Just found some p. coprophila in mostly old hay (probably had dung on it. The possibilities are neverending. If they look liquified and nasty, they are likely a coprinus. (very black and fucked up like a decaying unbrella). Probably are. Enjoy. Southern Tennessee has cubes so run for the border GatorB.

Believe me... I know cubes are in Southern Tenn... I'm just in the wrong part of Southern Tenn. The Eastern part! There's jack shit here.

Anyway, thanks for the info. I'm sure once I find a fresh specimen, I'll have pics of it up here w/ info for ID.
