Busy Mans Guide Contam problems

Hello and first thank you to everyone on this site it's amazing. So as I slither from under a rock and sheepishly admit I am that person described in Busy Mans Guide. I work 60 plus hours a week. But here I am, the choice for me was prescription antidepressants (long story) or psychedelics. I could purchase them illegally or grow my own in some way. Even the busy mans tek is more cost effective than what I can buy the product for and my first handful of tries using outdated tek and spores yielded results via a modified monotub. And it was wonderful watching them grow! Actually it was fucking beautiful! So I decided to go down the LC to purchased sterile spawn to purchased CVG route. But I've hit a wall and I'm getting contamination after contamination. I have a SAB, I flame sterilise and appeared to have good colonisation of bags with what I think was contaminated free grain spawn. But all my bulk spawns to monotub have gone green so far. We have had some significant heatwaves here, and the grain bags have sat for periods in 30 degrees celsius. I've lost 8 bulk mono tubs to green. I've got 4 left.

I'm getting LC from a reputable retailer. CVG from a reputable retailer, following SAB and sterile techniques. From this point I've definitely made mistakes by either not recognising that the LC is contaminated, not identifying uncolonised grain going to bulk, not recognising contamination in the grain bag, not introducing enough FAE during bulk colonisation and maybe not having enough substrate? Substrate depth is about 3" in a 37litre tub and letting the grain bags sit at too high a temp during the heatwaves. So any advice would be helpful I've been trawling through this site and think I've got a ladle on the many things I've done wrong, some confirmation of how useless I am would be welcomed.

If you're already doing all that, then why not test on agar? Make your own spawn grain. You can use straight coir, no need to buy CVG. Growing is a waiting game. You can be "busy" and still do it properly.

I agree, that does make sense and I had thought about testing the LC on agar which I think I'll do this week. I had a look at the process of pasteurising coir. I'll probably look to do that. It remains my intention to learn  from scratch the whole process. Thanks for the reply.

You don't need to pasteurize coir. Bucket tek, brick coir with hot water. I use loose coir with room-temperature tap water.

These temperatures are brutal, especially for growing mushrooms. Higher temps result in higher rates of contamination. Not saying it's impossible to grow, but that many grows meet an early fate :sad::mushroom2:

But fear not! It's not impossible. Just a little disheartening to see stuff go before it's time. Paring this with potential contamination from the source makes it incredibly hard to narrow down.

Thanks for the links, I'm going to source some millet and coir. Quick question, do you prefer to use millet due to faster colonisation times?

Of course! Happy to help:mushroom2: I'm not sure that millet colonizes any faster than other grain. Though having the option to just load jars and cook is awesome.

If you have a feed mill around, I highly suggest giving them a call and seeing what they have in stock. They often sell grains wayy cheaper than ordering online.

The white millet I got was $36 for a 50lb sac. Also got a 50lb bag of wheat for $13 :dancer:

Millet grain colonizes slower than larger grains like popcorn due to the massive increase in surface area. The trade off is all that extra surface area means more points of inoculation when you G2G expand or when you are doing the spawn run. Then the colonization seems quicker.
