hemlock

i found what i think to be poison hemlock(conium maculatum). i say think because i'm not sure if it grows in the northeast, so it could be anything. i looked around on the net but couldn't find any useful info. also, is it good for anything? i've noticed it on natures mind and bouncing bear so i figured you must be able to use it for something without killing yourself.

It's good for killing things. As far as I know, hemlock is extremely poisonous.

They collect a number of poisons... like the mescal beans, .... and the daturas (IMO)

I had huge freaking trees of it in my backyard... (8 footish).... I dug it out, and the roots grew back... to this day I've yet to kill all of it...

Socrates killed himself with it

If you notice it is listed amoung very poisonous seeds (on natures-mind)... Just because natures mind lists it doesn't mean it will get you high... its a deadly poison. Somethings really ARENT for human consumption.

You cannot "safely take mescal beans" Do you know what chemicals are in these plants? Highly poisonous alkaloids that can easily kill you. I'm not trying to be a jerk but it seriously worries me seeing posts like this and I may unlist several items because of it.

I am not going to lie to you though .. I have done some "research" with mescal beans and I can confirm that the potentially fatal dose is not much higher than the "recreational" (I am very hesitant to use this term) dose.. Its far from recreational.. respiratory paralysis isn't fun. Trust me.

Please please please research these plants deeply before you decide to put anything in your body. I would seriously hate to see people ingest these things.

Understand that I am being so blunt because I care, not because I am trying to be hostile. Now, go to your room!

Dosing poison hemlock just makes me think of some one trying to dose some curare or something of that nature... Destroying Angels anyone?

thank you for the concern. i just wasn't sure because even things such as digitalis have a purpose in small quantities. as for the mescal beans, i have done some research but didn't find to many solid answers (except for erowid, awesome site). thanks for the answers, and keeping me from doing stupid shit! :hippie:

well yes they do have a purpose.. they are very potent medicines and have been used for a wide array of medical purposes in the past and possibly today but only by very very proffesional trained herbalists and shamans. nothing for uninformed.

Look for purple blotches on the stems, that's a pretty sure sign that you have hemlock. Also, it's a very handsome plant when growing well. When I was looking for it to add to my collection, I kept seeing finely toothed leaves in hedges and by roads and thinking "that might be it!" and each time it wasn't, just something else in the same familly. Then one day I saw a huge clump, seven or eight feet tall, with big, deep green leaves, and I knew what it was straight away!
The seeds have a fairly distinctive appearance too. If you get seeds that look right, and purple-blotched stems, you have hemlock.

Edit: look at these links.

Yeah, it can be quite invasive...
If you have no valuable plants around it, I'd dig out as much of the root as I could, and treat the rest with a potent herbicide. Sodium chlorate is a good one, but I know from talking to people about my other hobby that you almost certainly won't find that in America.
Trouble is, it seeds itself everywhere, too!
