Summertime spore death from heat
    #2959757 - 08/03/04 12:05 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

I live in the great southwestern desert in the usa. I am curious if anyones microscope viewing projects were disrupted by spore syringes being cooked to death by the summer heat.
I will put off my microscopy project until cooler weather if this is a probability, I want to see live spores..
Thanks for any and all input

Thermal death to spore samples happens at 120F. This can occur in more places than just the SW during the hot months of the summer. There are serveral ways to get around this and still order spores during the hot periods, but it will cost you some extra $$.

If at any point along the voyage your spore syringe or print is exposed to temps more than 120F, then you can probably consider them cooked. If the exposure is brief, some of the sample will probably survive in tact. However most of the damage occurs when the package is either waiting for your retrieval on a front door step or mailbox or while it is in transit in the back of a truck or delivery vehicle.

You can minimize these problems by ordering your material via Express Mail or Next Day type services. These services usually limit the amount of time your product will be exposed to high heat and they will never travel overland (ground) in the back of big semi trucks. This will cost you $15-20 depending on the service. Sporeworks is very happy to work with customers that have special shipping requests like this, just shoot us an email or PM and we'll make the arrangments and provide shipping quotes from multiple carriers.
