I actually didn't make it to the beach, because I had to nurse my dog back to health from a REAL bad food poisoning incident. I ended up munching my mushies at home, and listening to Phish and The Dead on my headphones, and watching finding Nemo.
As for Japan, I'm going mainly to train in Aikido(a martial art I've been studying for 3 years now). We're gonna train for a week, I'm gonna take a test, then we're gonna hang out and sightsee for a week. I'm really excited.

Sorry to hear about your dog, hope he's all better now. That sounds like a really cool trip, I'm going to have to Aikido. I practiced takwondo(sp?) when I was younger but lost interest cause that kind of stuff is all tough guy crapola.

That's one thing that really appeals to me about Aikido, is that it is VERY effective self defense(It is used worldwide by police forces), and yet is not a macho, beat the crap out of your opponent type of thing. I also appreciate that it is non competetive, as am I.

That is what I kind of figured, I have a friend into alot of different kinds of eastern almost buddhist type self defense's, he not aggressive at all, very cool, I figured this was something like that, I think I'll go read up on it.

I'm flying into Narita airport in Tokyo. Spending the first week training in Ichihara, which is in the Tokyo sprawl. Spending one night in some countryside town somewhere in the coast where my teacher used to live. spending a few days in Yokohama. Spending one night at a friend of my teacher's near Narita airport, then back to Portland.
Adom, if you are curious about aikido, check out Aiki web. There's alot of good info there, I think.

Dude, you are SO lucky! I have wanted to go there for years! I read Morihei Ueshiba's biography a few months ago and was fascinated. My son is going to start Aikido after soccer season this fall, and I will take it as soon as I figure my work and school schedule out! Have a wonderful time.
I am jealous!

that's awesome that you read O-Sensei's biography. He was an amazing man, whose legacy is still alive in me. How old is your son? Some Aikido schools actually won't accept children under the age of 12 or so, just because it is a very complex art, and difficult for a child to understand. Other schools really embrace children. Where do you live? I think you said you lived in the Rocky mountains area? There are some rather renound teachers in that area. I believe Saotome Sensei teaches somewhere in colorado. Von Krenner Sensei teaches in Montana. They both are very reputable.

Yeah it was called "the Art of Peace". I was completely blown away. WOW. What an amazing person. I have deep respect and admiration for him!
My son is 9. We don't have access to either of those Senseis unfortunately.

I'm sure you could find a good teacher in your area. Make sure to ask lots of questions, so that you know that they are the right teacher. There are alot of Aikido schools in the US. Some of them are very "Americanized" or "Airy fairy" aikido schools. I would suggest that you find out about the Sensei's background. Any good teacher will appreciate your curiousity.

My friend is back packing in Glacier right now, I would love to do that, the Rocky Mountains are amazing. I need to get out to Alaska too, I have a friend stationed in Anchorage but we don't have much in common, I should go visit him anyways. I don't know what is in store for my future but my main goal right now is to get to Tom Brown Jr.'s wilderness survival school and take a few course's. That will take me out to the east coast for awhile but I have to work all winter to afford that for next year. Damn it'd of been nice to have been born into alot of money

Tom Brown is a hero of mine, http://www.trackerschool.com. He has alot of very good books out also, I've been reading up on him, I need to get as much out of his books as I can before I got to his school. Hopefully I can spend a couple weeks living the hard life trying to hone a few skills before I get to his school. When I go I'm recording every word the instructors say and taking as many notes as possible. Short of a crisis I will surely take atleast his beginning course next year. It's expensive so it'll be hard to pull off more than one possibly 2.

Good luck!! I've heard that's a tough barrier to overcome...I am dying to go to Japan but actually want to study the language for probably 2-3 years before I go.
