I tried Slackware, Debian then Gentoo. Personally Gentoo was a huge pain in the ass and I didn't see any useful gains in speed.

I'm running Debian now and it works great. I'm also working on setting up a mail/web server on Debian running postfix, mysql, courier-imap, apache, php, openssl and squirrelmail.

So my recommendation is drop Gentoo and get Debian.

I too switched from Debian to Gentoo, and I got a huge speed increase. It's really the only thing that keeps me on Gentoo, since I don't find portage as easy to use as APT.

Anyway, here's a tip: If you play any of the Quake games, don't bother with id's installer, just emerge the gentoo packages for them and copy your paks into the game dir (which it places in /opt).

No way i used debian when i first started. i need more bleeding edge and gentoo works way better when building from source. debian is ok for binarys but the toolds that come with gentoo are way better than debian. how was it a pain in the ass , gentoo is like the most customisable distro ive ever touched. ive left it before but always come back. o yeah and if anyone can help. i compiled a new 2.6.7 kernel just adding the iptables module thats all, i added nothing to the kernel, and i used genkernel. but when i boot it says the kernel is too bug. im thinking i may have acidently compiled ip tables into the kernel instead of as a module. know of any other possibilitys. remember this exact kernel worked fine before i made this one change

I prefer portage over apt, by far. The only downside is the way it handles configuration files. Updating all those files properly after emerging a bunch of things can be a bitch. Gentoo is easily my favorite distibution yet.

I've been using Linux for years, so if you're having any problems, I can try to help.
