Horse Shit

This is some good looking Horse Shit. Didn't take long to pick up 30 or 40 lb's.It's been dried, broken up then dried some more.My problem, the only straw I can find is on the end of a Broom. Has anyone ever used broom straw? Any way thats what the sales person said it was. All the feed stores only have hay. Looks like hay is it. This is my 1st try at bulk and hay sounds better than yard clippings to me.Give me some feed back.

Hay is Straw.......just of better quality.......
I grew hay in Montana......
Hay = good grass + alfalfa (in most cases)
Straw = The leftover stalks(cut and bailed)of a grain crop such as wheat, rye, oats, etc........

First off, I must say that I have had zero luck on growing on hay)and I have tried it multiple times). I was always told that hay and straw are totally different...as a matter of fact I was told exactly what was said above which is why I dont understand how hay and straw can be the same when your definition states otherwise. Just curious, so if you could explain this, it would be great.

hay is usually considered the greener product. Straw is golden yellow.

A PM From: mycofile straw, not hay. Hay has too much nitrogen, it overheats. It also has seed pieces, they contam. If you use hay, you are asking for trouble. Yes, you will find the odd fool that insists it doesn't matter, but usually just because they got away with it once or thrice. You can grow on straw with 0% contam rate, I doubt anybody would ever get less than 50% contam rate over time if using hay. We won't hold it against Moe though, outdoor cultivation is a whole different game.
Use straw for sure.
This help me I hope it helps someone else.

Ok so I knew this was a trick Question....... Hay is Straw in only as much as it is the cut and bailed stalks of organic material.......Yes hay is bailed with a much higher water content,(just below the point that it will mold, and sometimes even catch fire in the barn) and includes all the plant matter, ie.....seeds and flowers.......and way more nitrogen. Straw, as stated above, is generally the cut and bailed remains of a grain crop, after said crop was combined. In other words most, not all, seeds were removed during combining. I never ran a combine that came close to a 100%.......Straw may be left in a field for a month to get bailed, as it has no real value. And then there is the tricky 3rd party.......for example......Oat hay.......usually farmers will plant a cover crop on a 1st year planting of Alfalfa. The oats are sewn right in with the alfalfa and provide 'cover' for the newly planted alfalfa during the first year. Alfalfa is a perenial, and can need some help getting that tap root started. Some hay farmers don't have a combine so they just cut and bail the oats for hay, So its the same thing as straw(usually a bit higher water content if its gonna be fed to cows) but it includes 100% of the plant matter, and thusly has more nutrients. So, I hope this cleared up my simplistic answer above.......Sometimes i miss driving that ole combine.......hell, ours was even self leveling. And ole farmer once told me the only difference between Hay and Straw were the price......anything that kept the cows alive through the winter. peace p.s. USE THE STRAW!

It all depends on geographical location.......this is the time of the year for grain harvesting.......if you live near the middle of the country........straw will be in your backyard!
