Sanitizing my Substrate Jars"Pressure Cooker Broke"
    #2957303 - 08/02/04 06:52 PM (13 years, 16 days ago)

Hey everyone, well I am in to the pressure cooking process and I noticed the oring that hods the Temp gauge in the lid of my Pressure cooker is old and streched and actually shout the temp gauge out.

Here is my question. Since I am this far along what can I do to go ahead and get this batch sterilized and innoculated. I mean will boiling them inthe PC for 30 min or so be sufficient or do I need to put them in the over?

I am just trying to figure out what to do.

thankyou,

MB

Sounds like you might have overheated it dude. And I got more bad news............

If it blew out under pressure then your jars are fucked.

Here is what happenes when you blow the pressure........

Water boils at 212 deg. ( I think) the reason we use a pc is to get the temps up right?

That is done by bringing the pressure up but, inside the pc the water is still at a slow boil even though it is at 270 deg.

Here's the bad part.... When there is a sudden release of pressure. All the water in the jars suddly becomes steam and comes flying out of the jars!! Therebye SCREWED

I have personal been thru this and attempted to go ahead a incolulate my jars only to wait fuckin weeks for nothin but a failed fuckin mess!!!!

Sorry but if it blew you will have to start over

Actually the temp gauge would pull right out of the lid before I started. THe rubber gasket is worn out. The temp didnt get very hot at all. When the steam started shooting out of the little escape place I placed the cap on it. Not but a minute later the gauge came out. It hadnt even started reading pressure yet. So the jars are in great shape. I just need to get them sterilized so I can innoculate them;.

thanks,
MB

If you used Brown rice powder and verm. then yes you can boil them for an hour.

Just make sure you leave them in the pot until it cools.

It helps keeping the contams out when they cool down

you know air sucks in the jars as they cool.

hmmm, i noticed after pcooking popcorn i see water build up in the bottom, about a tablespoon worth. Is this because i use the pressure release valve to immediately remove the jars? it doesnt seem to be a big deal because after they cool overnite the water seems to soak back into the kernals...
