After defat.
    #2955181 - 08/02/04 07:29 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Last weekend i tried an extraction on some plants, these were defatted in petroleum ether. This being quit expensive stuff i wondered if its possible to reuse it after defatting.

When i let the flask with fat residussit the fat goes to the bottom end the p ether looks very clear. Is it so that the fats and solvant also seperate and if so is it possible to reuse the p. ether after decanting?? Or is a still the only way to go? I?ma bit afraid to distil p ether so i hope that wont be the case.

peace.

I suspect there are still materials dissolved in the ether that aren't affecting the color, so you'd probably have to distill it to get it back to it's original state.

It's possible to re-use as is, but it's efficiency will be decreased b/c it already has some fats in it...

If you re-distill it will be good like the first time you used it.
But i would prefer spending my cash in more solvent than mess with boiling petroleum ether...

BTW the unwanted stuff should be dissolved in the pet. ether, not separated.
I think the other layer on your solvent might be emulsion...If it is so you might want to separate it and wash it with acidified water, because it will still probably contain some goodies.

good luck

I tried reusing it but it was completly saturated with fats. End product looks great tho
