Complete Newbie has questions...
    #2954835 - 08/02/04 01:44 AM (19 years, 7 months ago)

Hey Guys,

My friends and I are planning to trip sometime soon, but our problem is finding them. We've encountered several occasions that our contacts just couldn't get a hold of any. Something always goes wrong when we try to get shrooms so I figured maybe we could find some. We live in southeastern Pennsylvania, on the outskirts of Philadelphia if that helps. I'd be thankful for even a pointer to a helpful FAQ on finding shrooms. Thanks for your time..

Please keep in mind that mushroom hunting is not something you'll very likely get the hang of within, say, a week. You'll have to go out and practice your id-ing skills before you start to ingest the specimens you find. You have to be 100% sure of the id of a mushroom you found if you really plan to eat it, and it's not always easy (read: bloody difficult) to get a definite id on a specimen. Especially if you're hunting for liberty caps (which seems most likely regarding your location) you should be very careful indeed. Many inexperienced hunters mistake random LBMs (Little Brown Mushrooms) for liberty caps. Please familiarize yourself with the id-ing process and with the properties of the species your looking for.

Be careful, but more importantly: have fun! There are lots of interesting species out there, go out and find them!

Don't get your hopes up on hunting in PA. I was in lancaster for a couple weeks and versed up on the local actives. It's pretty much dead up there except for a few panaeolus subbalteatus.
