grain jar question
    #2953872 - 08/01/04 11:29 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

alright so I soaked my rye for about 20 hours and then rinsed it for about 10 minutes..loaded the grain put in about half as much water as grain...Pressure cooked for an hour...The rye breakes apart nicely and doesn't clump but I got alot of sticky like residue on the other side of the glass...is this normal?

You'll probably be okay, but, it sounds like you added too much water.

You dont need to add much additional water to the jars after soaking.

man
u are tatally bein waay to complicated
all you have to do, at least for my friend is this:
-soak for about 16 hours.
- then rinse WELL for about 10 mins
-simmer in a pot for about 45 mins, no less no more than ohh say 48 mins
-make sure it is "simmering" and not boiling or anything
-drain, you should find that a few but not a lot of the rye kernals have busted, this is perfect.
-load the jars with the strained and draind rye and put on lid.
-pressure cook for 1 HOUr
-make sure you have a hole and shit for the lid as well as foil an shit.
-inoculate
-it took 2 weeks to fully colonize a 1 pint using a heating pad

Doesn't that seems more complicated than what he said?

No experience with rye grain. I have it on very good authority that all you have to do is boil water, turn down heat, then simmer grain with lid on for 45 min... no soak.

Experiment and do what works best for you.

naw soak = good
and doijn it this way makes it so u dont have too much or too little water in the jars.
you just simmer and stuff
no measuring required

He said the same thing you did only with less steps. How is that more complicated? Also, no one has mentioned measuring yet. I'm sure your way works well for you though.

two weeks to colonize a jar is way too long for me. If a jar is not colonized in 5 to 7 days out it goes.

Prepping the grain and jars.

1. First thing I do is put one cup of rye in each jar.

2. Put in enough water for the soaking. I like to soak for 24 hrs. Notice the difference in the color of the water after 24 hrs. Bacteria spores have started to germinate. This is the reason we soak the grain. Many believe that this is where water is added but this is not true. We are germinating the bacteria endo spores because they can survive a PC if we don?t.

3. I pour out the water and fill and shake and pour that out. Put in a pot and the water is ready to simmer for 45 min. During the simmer is when the water is added to the grain

4. Simmer the grain and then rinse with water. I like to pour 6 gallons threw the grain. (no reason for 6 it?s just a me thing) The grain is ready to be put into jars and PCd.

5. Put 2 hole?s in the jar lids. One is a breather and one is for the syringe needle. Put a piece of tyvek over the top add the ring and some foil and your ready to PC. Be sure to leave room in the jars to shake the grain

6. Load the PC and pc for 1 hour at 15 psi. Here is a finished jar.

You said "NO SOAK" not a good answer my friend. The whole point of soaking is to let the containment spores have time to give birth to many more of the little bastards. ( I know magash just said this but I'll say it again)There are these certian type of little bastards that have a shell around them that protects them from even the pressure cookers high temps. They are called endospores. They will make it thru a trip in space. Tough little bastards. When you soak your grain these things swell and split. When you do not they split open in your jars days later after you introduce the spores. You run a much higher chance of infections. I found this to be very true in my experience. oh yes........

Magash sure can do a great job can't he?

I couldn't agree more.  And once again let me say "I'm sure your methods work well for you!!!"  It wasn't my intention to put down anyone's "tek".

my reply was to someone who admonished another against making it too complicated and then said the exact same thing.

If you really want to make it less complicated...

Cook grain.  Rinse and drain.  Fill Jars.  Let stand one day.  PC.

And like you said one day waiting is better than chucking it in the trash after doing a bunch of work.

Well I think your still soaking, just your doing it after cooking them instead of before.........same thing I think

You are still giving the endospores time to hatch prior to PCing.

What ever works!! LOL
