I prefer a 1/4" staright verm (small particles) casing layer for cakes, especially if there are no pins/primordiates on the cake when birthing.
(i.e. failed invitro primordiation or beginning new flush)
I always followed this with success after seeing PF pics with scant casing layers back in tha day

oh and mist the casings (and cakes if you like) with a h2o/h202 solution daily til you see primordiates/pins, then let the humidity do the work.

yeah, dont do it daily.. but, i think (maybe is just placebo effect) that right after casing, a spray with h2o2 might give some advantage to the mycelia...
just once or maybe twice....
