All that presoaking the rye does is rehydrate any spores that may be in the grain. Because of this, they are easier to kill during autoclaving. If you do choose to try it next time, just soak it for a day and then prepare you jars like you normally would. Since doing this, my friend has lost only a few jars to contams.

That's not all it does. By soaking, or steeping, you achieve even water absorption which is hard as hell to get when you just add the ingredients and autoclave them. I would never use grains without steeping them first because the two largest causes of failure are A) Contamination and B) Uneven/Improper moisture content. BOTH are eliminated by steeping. As in all steps of mushroom culture, a few hours now may save you days or months of disappointment later.
