Anyone not use tape over jars?

I was curious if anyone just puts foil over there brf jars without using tape over inoculation holes. I have always used tape and then foil over the top.
I am going to mixing up 36 jars later today. Last time I did 36 jars I remember that it really sucked putting tape over all those dam holes.
So tell me about your experiences!

A FOAF never uses tape and he always keeps the foil.
The tape slows down colinization time by restricting oxigen.
Good luck.

If you are careful and never allow the jars to tip on there sides at any time after incolation. You can take the lids right off. This is how I do it and as long as I don't move them they are fine. Benifit??? I gain as much as a week in full colnization time. The whole point is to never let the top verm. layer to move around and tops off is the way it works for me.

You know now that I think about it I believe our furnace has a hepa filter built in to the ducts. I do know the more air exchange you get to the myc. the better! But yeah,I once lived in a old house and the contm. levels were so high I ended up doing everything out side.

I never use tape on my jars. Just make sure you have no updrafts and keep the jars upright all the time. You might want to try some polyfill. The plastic fuzz that they put inside pillows. You can get it at walmart or craft stores for a couple bucks. Just shove it into the hole and sterilize your jar like normal. I have never melted it, but be careful of that.

I usually don't use tape over the holes. Actually I made up a batch of pf jars, half with lids and tyvek, half with just tyvek. The ones without the lids are a bit too dry. I'm guessing its the lack of lid that did it, still colonizing, just slow.

I dont use tape over jars, just foil...last batch went 15 for 15 without contams, pcd for 45 mins at 15 psi. I dont like the idea of the vaccuum sucking in all that air at once when you punch thru. I have been considering using tape for liquid cultures however.

I use tape untill the jars are fully colonized then I loosen the lids well enough so they are still on but not tight at all . I tighten them after inoculation. I have had nothing but great results using this method.

the first time i grew, i didn't use tape on my jars and out of six of them, 5 were contamed with either severe cobweb, black mold, or both. i live in an apartment complex so i think we have mold spores EVERYWHERE. i now use tape until the jars are almost colonized and then i take it off. i do it about a week prior to birthing.

Faulty sterile culture technique is responsible for your contams not omitting the tape. Tape slows down growth {b]IF the jars are actually sealed. Tape can certainly stall mycelium growth they need gas exchange! to be healthy. FYI if you were doing the PFTek then your verm barrier was also your contam barrier and a piece of foil over the top will help maintain the jars moisture level as well as provide an addition barrier for combatting thoses contams.
-------------------- Getting the most out of your casings!, A pinning strategy. Oyster Shell "Flour" $2 for 1lb. a hell of a deal Not what is overlay but rather what overlay is Gas Exchange vs. FAE "We all have priorities. I used a closet once setup a nice little lab trouble was all the shit that was in there ended up in the bedroom that pissed off the GF then I ended up dumping her as she was getting in the way of my sterile culture technique! Ya I got priorities too!!!"
