Experimenting with substrates.
    #2951382 - 08/01/04 12:33 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I am curious how many people experiment with additives to there substrates. I get the feeling that a lot of stuff has been tried and is always being repeated because there is no place to look to see what has and has not worked. I am working on testing the adjustment of fat and protein in a PF style cake by using lecithin and soy oil. I don't know if it will work but it is worth a try.

What have others tried and what was there success and/or failure?

This could make a good library if people could fill out a sheet with some data about the experiment and submit it!

I try different things all the time... One of my favorits is to go out in the garden and pull some new plant or some weeds and dry them out. Cut them up, use them for casings, substrates etc. So far I found that cut grass clippings is excellent for a replacement of straw, Misc. dry stick weeds cut up do as well! I also make all my water for cakes and bulk from my compost pile.... I run a couple gallons af water into the top of my compost barrel and catch the drain water coming out of the bottom. Don't even bother to strain it, use it dirt and all! The subject of OIL... I tried that and found that it didn't do very well but,I also didn't take that experiment seriously enough to warrent an opion. Yeah and plain old garden dirt mixed 50/50 with verm. works great and so does straight compost from my barrel( pasturize and dry out) Once I crushed up one a day mutil minerals, put 1 per jar. Didn't really notice any diff but, who knows. I say this "Keep trying things because sooner or later one of us is going to stumble accros an additive that make SUPER SHROOMS!!!!!!!!!"

some people here will swear that using quinoa grain in substrate will make your fruit tons more potent because it naturally has a very high level of tryptamines in it. im trying it out in the batch im growing now, so ill have to get back to you in a few weeks.

i get it at a co-op in town for like 1.30$/lb -- its just a small round grain, looks exactly like millet except not as yellow. try healthfood stores or co-ops. www.yellowpages.com is your friend.

these are the instructions i used, make sure to read the comments at the end.
