Noob question about spore prints..
    #2951272 - 08/01/04 11:44 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I am aware this is a very noob question and may have been asked before but i may need to do a spore print for an ID, but i dont quite get what one should look like i have searched and found some information:

But that isnt quite clear to me e.g
"let the print dry for around 24 hours. Fold the print and tape the edges"

After leaving the cap down for 24hrs what should it look like? and leave what to dry? im sorry for being so noobish but i have never needed to pick or use spore prints.

also has anyone got any links or information about where and when liberty caps grow in the UK?

Thanks for your patience

Spore print for ID purposes is easier than if you are collecting spores for propagation.

Simply place the cap gills down on a piece of white paper and wait for the spores to drop. If you suspect a light colored spore print use black paper. Tinfoil can be substituted for the paper as both light and dark prints are visible on tinfoil. If the caps are dry, wet the top with a few drops of water before you start, but don't get them soggy. I usually use an upsidedown drinking glass to protect the caps from drying out and to prevent the spores from blowing away. Let it sit overnight and you should see a spore print in the morning. Hope this helps.

note: tinfoil is terrible to take sporeprints on for photos. it can seriously distort the color.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

According to Meinhard Moser, spore prints for identification can only be used if done on white paper.

Note also that some spore prints change color as they dry. For this reason, the color should be noted when the spore print is fresh, and it can be useful to know what color it is after it dries.

Happy mushrooming!
