does it dry if you have the bigger kind of vermiculite?

Don't worry, they always look dry. Even to this day, every time I use the PF substrate I'm amazed at how dry it looks. Vermiculite holds a hell of a lot of water, despite the size.

If you pressure cook (the best way) expect to loose about ten percent of the original water content.
