Does it speeds colonistation when putting in the dark????
I have put in one agar chunk, what's expected colonisation time when doing this at 18-22?C??

Dude, its like 2:00a.m. pacific time, sorry it took me a whole hour to get you an answer, I mean c'mon peoples, there were 4 users on the shroomery when he posted this, and this DOES sound like an emergency!

Lucky for you I am an insomniac........

Jars are colonized in the dark so they wont pin prematurely in the jars. Keep them exposed to light and they will pin sooner. Simple as that.

but then again, maybe not.... by keeping them in total darkness when casing, the light will have a more dramatic effect on them when it is introduced to initiate pinning... it *in theory* will be more of a 'suprise' to them, kinda like mycelium poking up through the earth, then seeing the sun... and realizing "hey, it's time to get a boner and ejaculate some spores, yeah! "

And I already forgot your other question.... g'night

I've heard of colonisation in the dark, but now I'm confused.
I think I'm gonna do an experiment, colonize 4 jars in dark one in light. After this 4 casings in dark (one week?) one in light (one week?). After this case in terrarium!!
Will report back on the successes!!

you should see something within a week.
like i kept reading here when i first started.

growing mushrooms is a game of patience.

the thing is to try and keep the cycle going.
when you have one fruiting.
have one colonising.
and have more jars on the go.

there's nothing worse than realising after your substrates finished fruiting or gets contaminated than.........waiting for more jars!!!!

Jars inoculated with piece of agar on monday, today(wednesday) still no sign of mycelium growth.
Should this already be visible?
Do the jars have to be able to breath or can I just make the lid a little loose and close so CO2 can get out??
Thanks!

Remember when the mycelium is colonizing in nature, its all underground (dark). When the mycelium reaches the surface and sees light it responds to the light by creating the fruit and sporulating. The spores spread in the wind, and the process goes on and on.

Okay, dark, will be done, but what about the lid, I have it on closed. Should this be a little loose?

Keep it slightly loose until you see signs of growth, then loosen more.

Its two in the morning......Do you know where your paperbag and flashlight are?

this aint chicken shake n' bake.
shaking will get your substrate up into the verm layer and that would defeat both your sterilization and verm layers purpose.

It's funny sometimes how some people always assume that EVERYONE uses the -pf-tek- like they do.

I'm afraid it IS about shake-n-bake freind. He's using grain for spawn.

Yeah.
Pavlo is right, read better first before assuming I'm using PF.
I looked at my jars this weekend. As I'm typing this, on monday 23/04/01 local time 9 am, the jars have been innoculated one week ago. This weekend on saturday only one jar had signs of mycelium groth. Most likely due to low temps. Today I'm gonna buy a sheet for reptile terrariums to place my jars ontop. Think temp can reach 20-25?C, should speed up colonisation..
