casing help
    #2949116 - 07/31/04 04:58 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I think for my first grow i am going to try and do a casing. I have been doing a lot of reading about casings on the shroomery and just wondering if my setup has a chance of working.

I was just going to use my casing container as my fruiting chamber. I am going to use a large opaque rubbermade container thats about 18" tall. My reason for not using a separate fruiting chamber is because i don't really have a lot of money to use so i figured that doing this would work fine.

for my casing mix, i was gonna do the 60/40 vermiculite coco coir tek. I was just going to follow all the instructions, and i was going to pastuerize it in the microwave instead of sterilizing it because i don't really have access to a pressure cooker or anything and i don't really have the time to do it with my parents allways around.

I was going to use around 8 cakes and do probably 2 separate casing/fruiting containers.

If you have any other suggestions, please let me know. Or let me know if there is no way in hell this idea is gonna work.

thanks

  Ahh! An ambitious first timer!

Although many people recommend doing cakes your first time out,IMO it isnt written in stone as long as you do your homework and dont try anything too crazy.

OK,so here are the suggestions that I have for you.

1. Since you have eight cakes you might want to just fruit a couple as cakes using the dunk and roll tek just as backup in case something goes wrong with the casings.

2. Instead of crumbling them with your hands it works much better if you use a plain old cheese grater. Just wipe it down with alcohol and let it dry completely and grate your cake into the casing container. I also suggest that you do more than two casing containers so that you have better odds of success should you get contamination on a couple of them. Maybe like four containers with two half pint cakes each would work well and you will still get a nice yield although the fruits may be a little smaller than if you went with two larger casings assuming that you were going with more depth vs. more surface area. It is also a good idea when putting more than one cake into the same casing container to sort of keep them separated instead of mixing them all up. Nothing to meticulous ,just grate one cake onto one side and one on the other. This limits the amount of competition between substrains and should make for a better yield.

3. Once you have them grated lightly mist the freshly shredded myc with a light spray of 1/10 h2o2/water just to minimize chances of any contams ,although it is very unlikely at this point. (I would also recommend that you are careful as far as being as clean as possible during this process, especially when it comes to adding the casing layer.) Nothing crazy just use common sense.

4. Add the casing layer at about one fourth the depth of your colonized substrate. For the project you have I think about 2" of subsrate and a half inch of casing layer would be perfect. As far as your pasteurizing the casing mixture instead of sterilizing, I think it actually works better to pasteurize since it will give the casing layer an extra defense while you are waiting for the myc to colonize it.  Once you have the casing layer applied lightly mist it once again with your h2o2 /water mix and cover with foil and pop it back into the inccubator and wait for growth to pop through. Then patch once or twice and then your ready to fruit.

So anyway your idea sounds like a good one to me,I like your ambition and wish you the best of luck with your first time!

MYKEY

P.S. Dont forget to let me know how it's going and feel free to ask questions anytime!
