figures, i drive out of the city to find some specimens, and all i had to do was drive through the park!!! driving along and seen orange in the corner of my eye, OOoooo, i stop, pick a bunch and bring em' home. i thought they were chanterelles at first, but they have true gills, i'm pretty sure these are jacks: I found them in the middle of a grassy field, it was humid as hell out yesterday, and rainy all night...this was a huge patch, i grabbed about half of the patch ranging from youngens from big old ones, there were larger ones there. I'm taking a print right now of the guys. edit: oh yeah, they smell kinda fruity and they made my fingers orange. havin fun

i think those are lactarius deliciosus (delicious lactarius). were there any conifers near where you found them?

Those are definitely *not* Lactarius deliciosus. Here's a simple test to verify that. Try breaking a stem in half, and note whether it's fibrous or breaks like chalk. Lactarius deliciosus have hollow stems (that are shorter than those look), that will be very definitively not fibrous. They will also bleed an orange colored latex, and bruise green. I don't see any green bruising on your specimens, and Lactarius deliciosus normally have at least some green (sometimes they're almost entirely so) when picked.
If you go back, dig under a cluster and see if they aren't growing from buried wood. If they're growing from wood then you've just about completely confirmed that they are Jack O'Lanterns.
The glowing from JackO'Lanterns is often very faint. Try taking them into a room without windows, turning out the lights, and waiting 5 or 10 minutes. If you're going to see glowing you should see it by then.
Happy mushrooming!

thanks tm, right now the ground i found them on is pretty saturated, flooded actually so it'll be easy to dig through. I broke the stem and it is like breaking a carrot, same color too! I'll try to check out the glowing again. i cut some stems and gills and they have not bruised green at all. waiting on the prints still.
havin fun

I found a huge cluster of Jack O Lanters and none of them glowed... I don't think all of them do.

I once found a large cluster and went out to visit them at night with a flash light. It took several minutes for my eyes to adjust before I could see them, but sure enough, they were glowing a very dull green. Looked creep as hell. I could see the glow in a completely dark room when I brought one home, but when I showed it to a friend several hours later, It wasn't glowing anymore. They appear to loose intensity with time, and the glow is very faint to begin with, the ones I found anyway.

they tend to glow more the fresher they are and the glowing is usualy very faint. it can take a long time for your eyes to adjust to even see it, and even a little light can sometimes make it impossible.
