Beginner casing mix
    #2947405 - 07/31/04 04:40 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Ive been reading up more on the casing mixes, and i've gotten a little nervous after reading about all the pH monitoring and controlling, seems a little more difficult than may are saying. Should i try to just do the coir/verm mix, or just verm on top of the casing? BTW, should i put perlite or verm on the bottom?

if you want to keep it simple, plain vermiculite on the top and bottom is great for me. i think you should start out with just that, so you can see how a casing works out. coir and verm is good too. i've never tested the ph of my coir and verm and they turned out great. when i did the coir and verm, i put plain verm on the bottom and the verm coir mix on top.

I don't think wet verm has a PH unless it has shit diluted in the water, does it?

Use the coir verm mix. No need to worry about the ph. Put a bottom layer to soak up myc piss and your good to go.

The pH of verm is fine its the peat moss that you need to worry about. I use coco coir (eco earth, get at reptile/pet stores) with warm water then mix in verm. I did throw in a bit of calcium carbonate but just cause its suggested and I had some, not much, maybe 2-3%, you dont need it if using coir though ^^check out magashs shizzle....purrrrdy....

It says on all of the guides to use a 60/40 mix. Does this mean 40% DRY or MOISTENED/WATERED DOWN coco coir?
Magash---did you mean just verm on the bottom or verm and coco? Thanks

There talking wet coir. I use the same casing on the bottom as I do the top.
