Different kind of species in France...Anyone know?
    #2944677 - 07/30/04 02:39 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hi all....I have just moved to the South Of France with the wife (Perpignan in fact) and very nice it is too.
I've been having a look around on the net to see just how many kinds of m/mushrooms grow wild here and at what times of the year but there doesn't seem to be to much info on this.

Does anyone have 1st hand dealings with mushies in France?

Any info would be great..

Many thanks

Stu.

Liberty caps grow in fields in the fall in France and Copelandia cyanescens grows along the coastal regions of Nice, Menton and the meditereanean regions.

The problem is that you're currently living in one of the drier regions of France.  I just returned from my vacation to the Gard (I camped somewhere between Ales and Avignon). I visit this region almost annually, and this year I stumbled across some mushrooms. They were some Agaricus species (dried out specimens) and some completely dried out specimens of a shelf fungus. This was the first time I found any mushrooms at all in this region, although I never really looked very hard.

According to mjshroomer, liberty caps should occur in your region, as Perpignan is definitely mediterranean  However, as the Perpignan area is a lot drier than the c?te d'azur in my experience, I doubt you'll have much luck on them.

All in all, your region is not what I'd describe as 'mushroom paradise', I'm afraid. But no doubt in the fall some interesting (though mostly inactive) species may be found.
