Will this work?
    #2944583 - 07/30/04 02:24 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Ok, I have a rubbermaid container.  I filled it up with about 3 inches of water, then I took this thin semi hard foam that is used for vinyl siding and put a piece of that so that it fits right on 4 glass cups placed in the water, but it higher than the water.

Now, my question is, after I use this as the incubator and I move to casing, can I use this as my fruiting chamber? Or will the water at the bottom collect contams and stuff and eventually contam my fruit?

Cause when you think about it, this is perfect.  I have 3 inches of water below the casings with a heater so its nice and warm and humid, and I will also have 2 mini aquarium pumps pumping fresh air in both sides most of the time.

Please let me know what you think.  If you aRe confused and need more information, just let me know.

Thanks!

~ Nate Wheeler ~

Note: this will be my first growing experiment (my order from TLG comes in Monday! )

so you have jars sitting on a shelf in the incubator in the dark, and you want to just birth them on the shelf in the light?
sure, that could work. a good temp to aim for is about 80-85 for incubating, and 70-80 for fruiting.

be sure to clean the shelf really well, and i'd put somethin like dilute bleach in the water to kill contams, as i don't like to leave standing water around my fruiting experiments.

good luck

Thanks.

Very good point.

But, I have to do it this way, its the only way I can keep it in my room without my mom finding it, and there is still a chance she will find it.

But, here is what my fruiting chamber will look like, because im making around 10 - 12 jars (depending on the syringe size.)
I am crumbling four cakes into a baking pan. letting two cakes fruit themselves, 1 cake by itself but cut into two pieces, 2 crumbled into plastic cups, and one in this gladware container I have. Also, all that has to fit into my one fruiting chamber, but I think it can be done, BUT, is that a big contam risk or no?

One more thing, when I make my jars, I plan on having a poly plastic filter on the lid for gas exchange, is that a good idea? Or do you think it will get contams?

Thanks!

Just buy some perlite, it is like 5$ a bag. Put that on the bottom of the rubbermaid container. pour water on it with a littler hydrogen peroxide in it. Get a second bin of the same size or bigger. depending on the size just put like an inch to 3 inchs of water, and your heater in there. set your heater for the right temp, then place your other rubbermaid in there. It takes up the same amount of space... maybe an inch or 2 taller. Once your cakes are done colonizing, just do casings. Make 3 casings if your doing 4 cakes per casing. then place your casing ontop of the perlite. If you know how to do casings, there is no point in fruiting as cakes.

As for the poly plastic... i dont know what that is, but i know tyvek works good. Just go to the post office and get one of their priority mail folders. they are free and 1 folder will make about 40 lids. (less if you use wide mouth)

ps:if your mom does find it, tell her your doing a science experiment and want to be a biologist/mycologist/botanist whatever, and just start saying stuff like "pf tek" "mycelium" "rhizomophs" "casings" etc... she will think your learning stuff and be pleased with you. And if she asks why your pod is hidden, just tell her at that point in the growing they need total dark. parents for the most part will always deny that their kids would do anything wrong. worst comes to worst and she figures you out, make her some mushroom tea... it will totaly change her view of things, and she wont care if you grow = )

good luck!

I read the article on the poorman's pod today. What do you think would be a better fruiting chamber, a poorman's pod or the one I described above?

Thanks!

here are some pics of my current incubator which will also be used as my fruiting chamber too.

So what do you guys think? Will this thing actually work?!?!

i think your trying to make it too complicated for a first time. also, your worried about your mom finding it?

How would it break? its underwater and its fully submersible...

if his heater is underwater then it will be fine, although the rest of his setup is a bit unorthadox. why don't you just spend a few more bucks and buy another tub because you will need to when you go to fruiting, that is unless you LIKE contams on your grow. also, when you said you were worried about your mom finding your grow, it made me think that you are under 18.

glass heaters are very unreliable. even for fish tank use. for some reason they tend to break when using in tub in tub method. i mean, u will find out soon enough. I am willing to bet money on this.
