High Altitude Finds...9500ft
    #2941809 - 07/29/04 06:36 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

So here i was posting questions if it was even possible to find anything way up here, having just moved to the top of the world.......

When today I hear some noise through the trees at my neighbors.......1/4 away

I walk over and find some painters working away, and begin to chat.

Not long after, I began to notice that there were shrooms growing all over the place!

There they were, at least 3 different types just happy as clams, enjoying all the rain and humidity that has been covering CO for the last month.

The painter dudes were totally unaware of my observations. On the walk back home i found another crop on my property!!!

I was shocked to know that they would thrive at such a high altitude in such a generally dry climate, and i what appears to be such a hostile enviroment......

I will try to get a pic up here soon. Read: I'm gonna go buy a digi cam.

peace

any similar high finds?

We get lots of kinds of mushrooms here in Colorado. A typical year at the Mushroom Fair (this year, Aug 21) yields over 200 species of mushrooms, the vast majority of which are picked high up in the mountains. We've had drought the last few years, so numbers have been significantly down. On the positive side, we have enough droughts that the commercial mushroom pickers generally don't find it worthwhile to come here. And there's certainly enough mushrooms to supply any ordinary person.

Happy mushrooming!

Hey ToxicMan.......I will look forward to possibly meeting you there in Telluride.......I am new to CO but Telluride is worth a trip, whether it be Bluegrass or Mushies........I have been to the Bluegrass once before and happen to know the boys of Yonder Mountain String Band........

Any info on this topic (high altitude) would be dearly appreciated........as in will buried casing live? I have a couple acres and no real neighbors, so my prop is ideal........just wonderin if its worth tossing 'em out in the wild?

I will get a digi cam soon and put up some pics.......I was just so shocked to see these growing way up here......its dry as hell and the soil is all de-composed granite........almost hydroponic in nature.

peace, and I will be there in Telluride......Its a good excuse to bust out the Harley!

I won't be at Telluride. The Fair I was referring to is the annual one by the Colorado Mycological Society, at the Denver Botanic Gardens. This year we'll have Dr Tom Volk as the official identifier.

The week of Telluride I'll be in Buena Vista helping with their annual mushroom hunt.

Telluride sounds cool, but it also costs a bit of money. The other fairs and hunts are free or very nearly so.

Happy mushrooming!

What is the Deal in Buena Vista.......I mean is it a public hunt? Do you have any info on it? Is it just an incredible edible hunt? Or are the Hunters ISO psychs?

I haven't registered for Telly yet as it is a chunk'o change, and I was trying to get input from the Pub if anyone had in past years attended........In other words, was it worth it.

peace

and thanx for the replies........still havn't bought me a digicam......spent my budget on tubs and a humidifier.

I have been up on the west side of pikes peak in the past few weeks and the king boletes are already fushing. Lots of scaber stalks too, it looks like it might be a bumper year for bolete heads.

Yea, toxicman, please give some info on the buena vista hunt.

best regards,

Millet

Wow ....... Amazingly enough i live out in the forest not far from Cripple Creek........Since my discovery on my property i have been walking the dog more.......(not good to take along on hunts, as soon as he sees i have interest in something he wants to dig it up for me).......but i havn't noticed any growth outside my property.

In my 'yard' i have now found 6 different types......one was small and purple......odd looking.......and a few baggies with the corners torn out......Read: Dope feign drops baggie?

Anyhow i was wondering if the previous owners were starting the shrooms? I mean they were definetly partiers! The guy rolled his truck the night before closing!

I guess my logic is since i can't seem to find any outside my place perhaps they were inducing the growth? i mean my property cant be an island of fungal diversity?

peace

I will contact the organizer of the event to find out about those things. I don't think I'll be able to get in touch with her before tomorrow. Sorry for the delay.

Happy mushrooming!

I have been visiting Northern Colorado on the state-line of Wyoming and saw some mushrooms growing in the Cow Rancher's fields. What type and how do identify magic mushrooms in this area?

Thank you.

Mushrooms seem to like people, we create the right environment for them to live when we cut wood and water gardens and lawns. We also travel alot picking up spores and carrying them from place to place. It's not uncommon in my experience to see a campground thats loaded with different species of mushrooms, and then walk out into the woods in all directions and find very few if any. I find it highly likely that you neighborhood IS an island of fungal diversity. Something as simple as a path through the woods creates it's own unique ecosystem that many species of mushroom have adapted to.

It's interesting to note that most of the magic species grow either on domestic animal dung, or wood chips. These habitats result most often from the actions of animal husbandry and wood cutting. We create the habitat and then we travel around from one created habitat to another, inadvertently spreading spores. The psilocybian mushrooms have adapted to us. In return for our services these little colonies of fungi offer us something beautiful in the hopes that we will love them and cultivate them. I would not be surprised to see the number of active species increasing as we continue to make specialized environments for them to live in.
