Possible Amanita var. formosa
    #2940629 - 07/29/04 02:59 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

These were found growing under birch and some under pine trees. Vibrant yellow/golden in color (picked in central NH/east coast so yellow coloration should fit the bill) with typical amanita bulbous base. They all have the characteristic "warts" on them as well as whitish gills. Only a few picked today many younger specimens maturing around me. Working on a spore print right now.

Is the stipe yellow??
or is just coloring from the veil???

If it's yellow then you most probably..
don't have A. muscaria var. formosa...

Though not as drastic as it appears in the photos, yes most of the stipe does have a yellow hue to it... Possibly from the veil but very possibly just yellow. Any thoughts as to what else it could be?

Cut it down the middle..
and scrape the interior flesh
with a semi sharp object.. Watch for
bruising/color change and post back..
Let's check on the spore print.. they drop
and and delecquiese sp..very easily...
put them in an air tight humid environment in
the sun or under a lamp for a little while..
Not too long or they will turn to goo....Nofindum/...

Doesn't look like any Amanita Muscaria var. Formosa I've seen. There are several patches within eye shot of my front door and all the ones I've seen clearly have a very white stipe. Vulva doesn't seem to be as bulbous as I'd expect either. Could be wrong though.

I agree with the others, that doesn't look like Amanita muscaria var. formosa... Not sure what it is, check out magmamagic's suggestion.

Thanks for all the help - I've looked into it and it does appear to be a Amanita flavoconia (Thanks for that MagmaManiac.) I am spore printing it again just to see, my first one turned out a wet splotch on the paper. Thanks again for helping me out.

I've found the same shrooms today, man! white prints, totally fits the A. flavoconia bill. all across the board! I'm looking for any info on experiences. I've heard mild hallucinations, etc. All literature I find on Amanitas only mentions under scientific parameters.

All amanita's have white spore prints, including the deadly ones, so that won't help ID it to species. My guess would be Amanita aspera; your photos look more yellow/brown than yellow orange. Neither flavoconia nor aspera has well documented edibility/toxicity.
Experimenting with that mushroom would be a real gamble. I guess you have to ask yourself if the possibility of catching a buzz is worth the risk of dying. In all probability you will either barf your guts out or experience nothing at all. Be careful.

I was being fairly rude..
Not my normal course of action when responding to posts.

All appologies.... RasB....
A quick google search of A. flavoconia toxicity
gave me those results... Mushroom expert on bluewillow
pages is a good online reference...for mushrooms in general..
althought they don't list toxic effects or hallucinogenic effects either..

My personal opinion on Amanita species is to stay away period..
gdman420 and effed are the members to talk to about A. muscaria and
A. muscaria var formosa for it's active properties and first hand knowledge of the effects.... Nofindum...

I wouldn't ingest A. flavaconia and suggest you don't as well...
Just trying to keep it real... good luck.....

It's not muscaria var formosa. There's a ptach of literally 100's of huge ones close to my home, and they look quite a bit a different.
