Ireland is a complicated situation and we Brits have definitely treated the Irish in a very shabby manner but we only occupy Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is a country in its own right and this is where a large part of the IRA is based. What further complicates the matter is that a large percentage of Northern Ireland wants to stay under British rule.

The Brits occupy Northern Ireland, one of the last fragments of a once global empire. The Americans occupy North America, having taken it from the tribes that had inhabited it since time immemorial. A lot of warring went on over that too.
And economically speaking who has been attempting to occupy the middle-east since the early part of this century?
Not much in the global pattern has changed when we look at these days eh? If only we could push on past this...
My point however was that terrorism was clearly supported from within the USA. And in fact the US government spent years denying this, refusing to admit it despite the UK's evidence. The US Government allowed, and made $$ out of, terrorism that was being perpetuated against its supposedly closest ally: the UK.
(terrorism: which seemingly is never justifiable, no matter the argument - not by palestinians, red indians, irish folk or muslims. And note that in Ireland the supposed racial division is played out in actual event as a religious one, catholic vs protestant. Religion being the most powerful fuel to the fire.)
