Help with ID please.

Here is an interesting one.

It is growing on a well weathered yellow pine plank (attached to my smoker)

It shows up when the wood gets wet (Rain/Garden hose/etc.), and is growing from the cracks in the wood.

It is almost a emergency vest orange and is very small as you can see.
The one in the picture is one of the bigger ones.

My question is what would I need to get (Book) to identify a mushroom/fungus and what is a good place to start learning about identification?

If anyone knows what this is I am curious.

Wow, that's one tiny mushroom. I don't have a clue.

There are several good mushroom field guides available at most mall book stores and of course on Amazon. I would suggest National Audubon Guide to North American Mushrooms.

It's a fun sport, and good exercise. Beats the hell out of a stair master.

Happy hunting.

It looks similar to Sarcoscypha occidentalis, a common cup fungus on wood.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks shroomydan, ill look into the book.

ToxicMan, I looked up some images of the Sarcoscypha occidentalis. It looks close but from looking at it, it appears to have the texture and translucence of Auricularia auricula.

Here are some Auricula auricularia I found last week:

They have no stem and are typically the colors you can see in the photo.

Happy mushrooming!
