First time growing edibles - will this plan work
    #2939580 - 07/29/04 09:28 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I have one syringe with phoenix oyster

I was thinking about innoculating jars with grains (what temperature should i have the jars in, can i put them in my cubensis incubator?)

then spawn the grain into bulk material (hay), and use a straw ball tek (putting the straw in plastic bags and hang them up, as I understand oyster needs alot of air.), is this a good idea? someone told me oyster can grow on anything so I take what I have. question; fruiting temperature = ?

Sorry if this is stupid or "read the f**** faq" question, i hope someone can answer these questions for me, i would really appriciate it.

You can inoculate jars with grain with the oyster syringes and put them in a cubensis incubator ( 22-26 degrees Celsius ).
I would not use hay as a bulk substrate since it has too many nuts and contaminates very easily.
Pasteurized straw would be much better.
Phoenix oysters usually grow on a broad range of substrates.
You also could try paper or spent coffee grounds.
The fruiting temperatures usually depend on the strain - the strain I use likes temperature between 20-28 degrees, a lot of humidity and fresh air.

Here is a pic of a jar of corn inoculated with P. pulmonarius:

And here is one of them growing on spent coffee grounds:

May I ask what kind arrangements you have for achieving this?
My oysters are always somewhat deformed when growing indoors...

Yeah, I know - when they do not get enough air exchange or humidity they a getting a bit deformed.
In this case I have put the coffee grounds in a laundry basket and that again on a big lid filled with water. The water is for rising the humidity.
On top of all I put a clear plastic with wholes in them.
But indoors you have to put away the plastic and spray with water several times a day anyway.
Here is a pic of the whole thing:

My method is exactly the same..in humidity tent.
Hope this strain of yours tolerates better those conditions.

How big is that basket?

edit:
never mind that last question, 45 liters is the answer:
