incubation is to keep the jars at an optimal temp for mycelium growth, but the truth is that temperature variations are not a *huge* issue. Jars can take 2-3 weeks for 1/2 pint, and then longer and longer for large jars. if mycelium growth is very slow, there may be a problem with substrate mix, or an infection you haven't noticed.

i have heard wrapping a box containing pf jars in a electric blanket will incubate the jars and speed colinization, but since i havent tried this it is speculation, but it sounds like a good idea to me.

Application of the species requried incubation temperature will definitely make a difference in the speed of colonization. If you don't beleive me then do a little experiment next time and keep a set of jars at 85F and then a second set at a fluxuating room temp of 70-75F. Not only will germination be faster in your 85F jars but full colonization will be reached much faster.

Although you are correct that most species will "work" if not properly incubated, giving them the recommended temps during incubation also helps with fruiting because the 10degree temperature drop between incubation and fruiting is a trigger that starts solid primordia growth.
