I hate IQ tests. I don't think they are a very good measure of intelligence, at all. My results have been so varied, my average is about 120 but I've been as low as 70 (mentally retarded) soooo, who knows.

I've never taken a real IQ test, only online. And they don't seem accurate at all from what I've heard. Like the others have said, I don't think IQ tests are a very good indication of one's intelligence.

I have had 4 IQ tests.
I normally rate between 158 and 165. It got me into Mensa. What else are they good for?

What would you say is a better indicator of intelligence? I seem to remember something you said:
"I'm also willing to admit that I'm smarter than at least 90% of the general population."
So what is that statement based on? Amount of education, some other test, reference group????
Just curious.
I?m not saying that an IQ test is the best indicator of intelligence, im just wandering what you personally perceive to be the best indicator.
i bet 35% of the people here are smarter than 90% of general population

I believe there are many different types of IQs...the normal IQ test that they give you is only based on 3 areas of knowledge (reading/writing, vocabulary, and math) I hardly think that is a good enough test to determine someone's intelligence by...there are many other areas, Science, mechanics (physical manipulation), Art, Music, Althetics (yes even althetics for some people have better ablities to learn motor functions than others)...well anyways I know some people that are great at memorization but terrible at common sense (able to figure something out and explain it) I believe if you just sit there and regurgitate stuff without any common sense into explaining the "why" of it all...than you wont make it far in life

Wow... apparently a lot of people have no idea what their IQ is... of course, with the numbers I see people on the forum claim, it doesn't surprise me.
The IQ curve is a normal distribution with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. The curve breaks out as follows:
* 50% of IQ scores fall between 90 and 110 * 70% of IQ scores fall between 85 and 115 * 95% of IQ scores fall between 70 and 130 * 99.5% of IQ scores fall between 60 and 140
Looking at the above, obvious more than .5% of the shroomery population is claiming to be above 140 IQ. Granted, computer users in general are a bit more intelligent then most, and we do have some very smart folks on the forums, but what is still too far fetched to be true.
* >200 - "Unmeasurable genius" * 180-200 - Highest genius * 165-179 - High genius * 155-164 - Genius (e.g., Nobel Prize winners) * 145-154 - Genius (e.g., professors) * 135-144 - Highly gifted (e.g., intellectuals) * 125-134 - Gifted (e.g., post-graduate students) * 110-124 - Above average (e.g., university students) * 90-109 - Normal or average intelligence * 80-89 - Dullness * 70-79 - Borderline deficiency * Under 70 - Definite feeble-mindedness
Genius IQ is generally considered to begin around 140 to 145, representing ~.25% of the population (1 in 400).
It is interesting to see how IQ relates to various occupations:
* 125 Mean of persons receiving Ph.D. and M.D. degrees * 115 Mean of college graduates * 105 Mean of high school graduates * 100 Average for total population * 75 About 50-50 chance of reaching ninth grade
For those that still claim to be above the 140 mark, here is the company you have:
* Johann Goethe - 179 * Bobby Fischer - 167 * Galileo Galilei - 165 * Albert Einstein - 160 * Immanuel Kant - 159 * Charles Darwin - 153 * Wolgang Mozart - 153 * George Sand - 143
As others have pointed out... IQ is only a single metric and it is not considered to be that strong of a metric when considering the whole.

yes, very true...What are these premises based on? I know the stats of the IQ bell curve but how do we pin point someones IQ after they were long dead...not that i totally disagree with the numbers they seem close but you never know

By comparing various works and such from the people that are dead with unknown IQs to like works from people with known IQs. It isn't an exact science, but then IQs are pretty loose as well.
