I wouldnt get the 256mb video card, no real need for it and your spending alot more. I would consider with the money you saved moving over to an Intel 2.8, 3.0, or 3.2.

SATA isnt that much faster either, you may want to consider some of the newest 8mb buffer IDE drives, save some more money there as well.

I think 256MB is the way to go right now because a lot of the next gen games are going to be taking advantage of the 256MB soon.

What I would suggest is getting going for an Athlon 64 3000+ and overclock it like hell. Here is link to an article about it: http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjI5

Although SATA isn't much faster than IDE, i still like it a lot. The cables are smaller and don't cause as much cable clutter.

You can probably just trash the floppy disk drive, people are using RAM sticks now which just stomp all over floppies.

I'd say if you're going for a socket A system get a Athlon XP 2500+ Mobile. It runs at a lower voltage which means you can overlock like fuck. You can get it to run at 3200+ speeds pretty easy with a good heat sink. here is a link for mobile athlon for $88:

Here is a link for a good heatsink too:

he dosnt know enough about hardware in general to be overclocking, as seen in his previous posts asking for PC help.

That system he is building looks good. I see nothing wrong with it other then the ATI video card, but Im biased against ATI after watching them have 2 years of driver problems before FINALLY making a decent WORKING driver. Now nvidia and ati are neck and neck and its mostly personal preference.

I'd get a 10k rpm SATA drive as well, but I'm a hardcore drive speed whore, as its the SLOWEST part of the entire box. I run 10,000 RPM ibm scsi drives in a raid 5 config. (way out of nugdumpers pricrange)

But thats all I see, maybe get a 10k rpm western digital sata instead of 7200.

It's kinda silly to be choosing computer hardware 4-5 months before you buy it

I'd be more concerned with buying a case that has nice cooling and room for the oiptions you want.

Had an old coworker build himself a 'dream computer' a few years ago, basically top of the line at the time, one step down on teh video card.. etc..

Cheaped out on the case and had NOTHING but crashes and problems.. Finally he asked me to come take a look at it.. after a few reinstalls, hardware checking etc.. it was HEAT killing his machine.. not enough room for airflow and not properly setup.

That Lian-Li case is pretty top of the line IMO. And its not that I have no knowledge of computers/parts... I've just never put a system together before. And fuck overclocking... I'm not dropping 1500 on a system to overclock, no way. Also, upgrading to AMD 64 would require a Mobo change, not to mention the price is insane for the small bit of performance boost.

As much as I would love an AMD 64, as a geek, for someone who is not a hardcore geek, it would be waste of money anyways.

As for the case, I didnt check the exact one. It was just a generic comment about cases in general. Lian0Li makes everything from cheap garbage to expensive really nice cases.

Just remember cooling is key, and to make sure yuo have good airflow through the case, in AND out.

I've been trying to decide between a 9800 and the 6800 non ultra. The 6800 is about the same as a 9800 but it does a lot better in doom3 so im guessing all newer dx9 games. So I got me one of those but just to give it a little more edge, pushed it to 350/800 instead of 325/700 to squeeze some more fps. You can get it for 280 off newegg and it comes with free far cry if you get the evga one. Check out Doom3 vid card compare

I stick with nvidia beacuse of ATI's track record of years of failed drivers and shitty indian programmers making 200$/month to code for them.

nvidia just does it right.  So far the only bad thing I've seen them do was how they marketed the first FX series, in a way that made people think the 5200 was better then a GF4 TI when it was actually the FX version of the 'mx' series.  But thats jsut trickery which is completely differnent from being morons who cant code for their own hardware.

(but thats just me)
