ahhh, I was afraid ppl would recommend #4, lol.

that's cool, I've honestly got enough spare substrate to try both or maybe all of them. I don't necessarliy mind chaulking this up as a learning experience if I fail because my cakes that *did* colonize are doing great thanks to your advice and others in a my other post.

Going out of town for about a week is a consideration, so neglectful ideas are best right now :)

A friend of mine cased (50/50+) some pieces a couple of weeks ago in a half pint jar and topped it off with verm. The jar fruited about a week ago. It had a small yield, but it did fruit. I would go with door number three, no reason to waste if you have extra substrate and casing lying around.

I think leaving the substrate in a sealed baggie with a little ambient light is the best and easiest option. The mycelium can get pleanty of oxygen through the plastic. There is no need to vent and no danger of the substrate drying out if neglected for a week or two. Plastic bags are great. Keep us posted.
