I hate IQ tests. I don't think they are a very good measure of intelligence, at all. My results have been so varied, my average is about 120 but I've been as low as 70 (mentally retarded) soooo, who knows.

I've never taken a real IQ test, only online. And they don't seem accurate at all from what I've heard. Like the others have said, I don't think IQ tests are a very good indication of one's intelligence.

I have had 4 IQ tests.
I normally rate between 158 and 165. It got me into Mensa. What else are they good for?

What would you say is a better indicator of intelligence? I seem to remember something you said:
"I'm also willing to admit that I'm smarter than at least 90% of the general population."
So what is that statement based on? Amount of education, some other test, reference group????
Just curious.
I?m not saying that an IQ test is the best indicator of intelligence, im just wandering what you personally perceive to be the best indicator.
i bet 35% of the people here are smarter than 90% of general population

I believe there are many different types of IQs...the normal IQ test that they give you is only based on 3 areas of knowledge (reading/writing, vocabulary, and math) I hardly think that is a good enough test to determine someone's intelligence by...there are many other areas, Science, mechanics (physical manipulation), Art, Music, Althetics (yes even althetics for some people have better ablities to learn motor functions than others)...well anyways I know some people that are great at memorization but terrible at common sense (able to figure something out and explain it) I believe if you just sit there and regurgitate stuff without any common sense into explaining the "why" of it all...than you wont make it far in life

Wow... apparently a lot of people have no idea what their IQ is... of course, with the numbers I see people on the forum claim, it doesn't surprise me.
The IQ curve is a normal distribution with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. The curve breaks out as follows:
* 50% of IQ scores fall between 90 and 110 * 70% of IQ scores fall between 85 and 115 * 95% of IQ scores fall between 70 and 130 * 99.5% of IQ scores fall between 60 and 140
Looking at the above, obvious more than .5% of the shroomery population is claiming to be above 140 IQ. Granted, computer users in general are a bit more intelligent then most, and we do have some very smart folks on the forums, but what is still too far fetched to be true.
* >200 - "Unmeasurable genius" * 180-200 - Highest genius * 165-179 - High genius * 155-164 - Genius (e.g., Nobel Prize winners) * 145-154 - Genius (e.g., professors) * 135-144 - Highly gifted (e.g., intellectuals) * 125-134 - Gifted (e.g., post-graduate students) * 110-124 - Above average (e.g., university students) * 90-109 - Normal or average intelligence * 80-89 - Dullness * 70-79 - Borderline deficiency * Under 70 - Definite feeble-mindedness
Genius IQ is generally considered to begin around 140 to 145, representing ~.25% of the population (1 in 400).
It is interesting to see how IQ relates to various occupations:
* 125 Mean of persons receiving Ph.D. and M.D. degrees * 115 Mean of college graduates * 105 Mean of high school graduates * 100 Average for total population * 75 About 50-50 chance of reaching ninth grade
For those that still claim to be above the 140 mark, here is the company you have:
* Johann Goethe - 179 * Bobby Fischer - 167 * Galileo Galilei - 165 * Albert Einstein - 160 * Immanuel Kant - 159 * Charles Darwin - 153 * Wolgang Mozart - 153 * George Sand - 143
As others have pointed out... IQ is only a single metric and it is not considered to be that strong of a metric when considering the whole.

yes, very true...What are these premises based on? I know the stats of the IQ bell curve but how do we pin point someones IQ after they were long dead...not that i totally disagree with the numbers they seem close but you never know

By comparing various works and such from the people that are dead with unknown IQs to like works from people with known IQs. It isn't an exact science, but then IQs are pretty loose as well.

I get between 135 all the way up to 165 from the tests (internet) I've taken. I also passes the mensa test when i took the online practice one, but never really felt like taking the real one. When we had standardized tests in school, I was always in the 99% percentile for everything. However, I don't think that makes me intellegent, it just makes me good at performing for psychologists who create tests they can project their own insecurities onto.
Personally, I think it's sort of dumb to look at the IQ of famous people. Really, the thing that made Einstein so good wasn't his high IQ, it was the freedom he had by not being attached to a particular school of thought. Same with Darwin. Most of the brilliant people were brilliant because they were so free from the conditioning that ruined their contemporaries, not because of high IQs. High IQ might be a pre-requisite for being super good at some field, but it's not sufficient.
A lot of mental illnesses also correlate with IQs at the ends of the spectrums.

I'm guessing most of these results are based on crappy online IQ tests people have taken
Either that or people are liars... or maybe the geniuses were just drawn to this thread, eh? If it was valid then it'd be in the shape of the normal distribution (bell curve) w/ 100 being the peak.
Correct?

well, I'm going to put my 2.5 cents worth in here...
as far as IQ tests have gone, I've been tested four separate times throughout my schooling. First instance was in 2nd grade.. and evidently, the backwater redneck school was so perplexed at my score (144), they put me in the "gifted program" which was, in short... jack shit.
Once in middle school, I was tested again (I literally was the Guinea Pig for the Smith County Board of Education.. I took all sorts of tests, not just IQ) and scored 163. I was allowed to skip Pre-algebra and jump straight into Algebra. Woopety-shit.
Freshman year of High School... yet another IQ test. pulled out at 148. okay.. no biggie.. the test was a completely different format, but same overall.
Last and final test, Junior year, before I dropped out (YES, DAMNIT.. I dropped out. Out of pure and simple boredom and the need to get out of that piss-ass redneck town. Got my G.E.D. later...) took yet ANOTHER damnable test. this one was three times longer than any previous IQ test I had taken, and involved me solving actual puzzles (like those nevelty puzzles.. the horseshoes with the chain and rin, remove the ring; or the two twisted nails together, just separate them). pulled out with a 157.
so for one.. I ranged from 144-163... so I'm either an Intellectual or a Genius... quite a difference on the IQ scale. I lose faith in the actual exact accuracy. But the IQ tests reflect the same results from other tests, including ACT's and various standard competancy Tests and College entrance exams (yes, I'm in college.. my ACT scores got me in... 35 if anyone cares.)
so.. to sum up all the previous babble, I do place some weight in IQ tests.. but not much. They do reflect some of the ability of a human mind, but I believe no test ont he face of the Earth can truely reflect the intellectual capacity of a person.

An IQ of 124 is very good. Anything higher than 130 is pretty rare. This poll is obviously not very accurate, since most people have gotten their results from an internet test or something like that (in other words, it doesn't count).

> so for one.. I ranged from 144-163...
Thats just it... an IQ score is your position relative to the rest of the population. You can stay the same, but the population can move around you, thus your IQ score can change as more people are tested.
> my ACT scores got me in... 35 if anyone cares
I got a 31 on the act. I aced every single section, except one... English. You can calculate how poorly I did on the English section rather than forcing me to admit it.
> Anything higher than 130 is pretty rare.
Anything higher than 130 would be more than two sigma (larger than two standard deviations from the mean) which is something like 0.05% of the population... or somewhere around 1 in 200 people.

the tickle iq tests and other such online scams have inflated scores so more people will think they are "genius" and get a super-inflated ego which will make them want to buy the $$$ personalatiy profile so they can read about how smart they are and feel really neat-o about it.
